Nurses General Nursing

I have been working as a floor nurse at a SNF for two years. A position just opened up for a Resident Care Manager and Ive decided to apply. I informally asked about the position yesterday and was told that there are a few other people (they wouldn't say who) who are interested and who have management experience (I do not but I do have a BSN which almost no one at my facility does). I am well-liked and known as a hard worker here so I think have a good shot. On Monday I will find out the actual application process but I suspect it will be a matter of simply letting them know I am interested and possibly an interview since they're only hiring internally at this time. However, i want to make a good, professional impression even though they already know me. I plan to write a cover letter as for any job and give it to the DON with a copy of my resume on Monday when I let her know I'm interested in the position. Do you have any other advice for ways to improve my chances (besides doing an extra good job at work over the next few weeks?)

Thanks!

I think your cover letter/resume idea is a good one. It leaves nothing to the imagination or forgetful memory about your desire for the position. Good luck.

You have insider advantage in that you know the problems and opportunities for improvement. The interview is not about you so much as it's about the employer- and you presenting yourself as a solution for their problems. It's quite possible that they see you as a good or great clinical nurse, but they now have to see you as a great potential manager- a different set of skills.

For example, can you communicate that you will reduce turnover, improve scores, ensure better surveys, etc.? Just wanted to give you some ideas from a hiring perspective. Best wishes :)

Thank you very much, that's helpful. Those are things I will address in my cover letter and prepare for if/when I have an interview as well. Thanks for your input.

Most SNFs I've worked at are very relaxed when in comes to these things. You could submit a letter to the DON, but what about just asking for a meeting? Go in and tell them you want the position and tell them why you would be a good fit :)
