About to Quit Before I even get there :(

I really need some honest advice. I know that it is hard to give career advice when everyone's personality is so different, but give it a try. I am in my 2nd year of a BSN program and recently have had some big life changes (moving 750 miles from home, moving in with fiance etc. etc.). I am so stressed out and about to give up on nursing all together. I think I want to do it, but everytime I decide, yes I want to be a nurse, I think of something that makes me not want to. I really worry about the stress levels of being a nurse. I do not react well with stress (in fact my anxiety has gotten so bad recently that my doctor recomended a low dose of prozac, and out of lack of other things to do, I accepted). I hate to change my major right now especially when I know my emotions are not on their most stable level. I think once I settle down from moving and all my changes, I will be ok. But if I cant handle stess in school now, will I ever make it as an RN? Am I setting myself up for a job I will soon quit? I dont know what to do. It does not help either that my mom once started in nursing school and quit. I am a lot like her in many ways but fear I will do the same (she is also pushing me to choose another career). I just dont know what to do. I want a career that is meaningful and helps people, not just a paper pushing desk job. I wonder too if once I got into nursing if I'd adjust hte stresses of being a nurse. Anything is stressful when it is new. Please, I need some honest advice. Have anyone had these thoughts while in nursing school, but kept on and now like their job? Sorry this is long and confusing, but that is how my brain is working at the moment.

"I think once I settle down from moving and all my changes, I will be ok." I agree.

Anxiety is fear of the unknown. I'm not sure you would be normal if you didn't have a bit of anxiety in your life. Your stress level is high, as naturally it should be with all the things and changes you have going on. My Dad's best advice: "And this to shall pass".

Good Luck in what ever you decide and my best advice to you is to learn from this experience and realize you are only human and don't put so much pressure and stress on yourself. Take life on in moderation.

prairiegirl...taking your age into consideration here, you are reacting normally to the changes in your young adult life...first leaving home going off to college, being away from the home front attending college, moving in with your fiance, having to make so many decisions and fear of failing at what choices you make....all of these add up to much stress and anxiety for you.

Take a deep breath, go have some fun and let go of all that anxiety, take one day at a time, make short goals, master those before adding any more.

As for your pursuit of nursing, only you can decide if that is something you want deep down. Give it a shot if you want. So what if you find out nursing isn't you, at least you ventured into it and discovered on your own that it wasn't or is good for you. Don't allow your mother to plant fear in you about your future. It's YOUR future, not hers, and you need to focus on that. Loving our parents is NOT the same as letting them control our life as adults. Tell your mom, you may or may not like nursing, but you are not going to allow her situation with nursing to deter you from trying. Failure only comes from never trying. Lessons are always learned when trying. :balloons:

I remember school and how hard it was. I also know having moved 13 times since 1976, I realize how hard that is. Marriage on the horizon is tough. You have so much on your plate right now so don't be hard on yourself. You could always decrease your class amounts or when you finish this qtr/semester take one off. I know that holiday breaks are coming soon so maybe that would help.

Nursing school can be very stressful in itself, if you are unsure what you want to do, try being a volunteer in a nursing home or hospital for a while. You will be exposed to the best of what nursing can be without all the stress of it. You may then be able to decide if nursing is what you want to do.

Hi Laura,

I have to agree with many of the posts that have been posted. I, too, worry about the stresses of nursing school and also have some of the self-doubt you have. About whether or not you should be a nurse, is a personal decision. But keep in mind that with nursing you have many avenues once you are finished with school. No one says that once you finish nursing school that you have to spend upteen years working as a bedside nurse, if that is not what you want. Perhaps, it can be a springboard to other avenues. With your BSN, you will have even more options than someone with an ADN. There are so many ways that you can be advocates to your patients.

Take one day at a time...don't worry about tomorrow yet. If things are really overwhelming, take a semester off. Maybe you can get some CNA training and work for a while to see if nursing is for you.

Think also of what you want to accomplish. This way you'll know that this process of going to nursing school is just that...a step to take to bring you to your goal.

Give yourself a break. First, think of how much you've already accomplished. Take a good look of all you've been through and realize that it's not easy. I think you are certainly getting a little burned out. But, if you acknowledge this and take a deeper breath, you may start to understand that what you're going through is part of the process which involves so much more. You know, after all this is over with and you've actually made it, you'll be able to look back and even relate to others in their struggles.

hang in there. I think you'll be alright if you just give yourself more credit than what you're giving yourself.

All good advice posted here. As I tell my son, life is a process...what you are doing now may not be where you will end up...but here is where you are now...we start somewhere...:)

If you are feeling too stressed by other circumstances on top of school itself, step back a minute and regroup. Can you take a semester off? Do you need to?

If you are normally an anxious person, perhaps you do need to take a look at THAT, as anxiety can control your whole life. I would make that a priority first and the rest will follow.

As far as do you want to be a nurse, we cannot really answer that one for you. Too personal a decision.

(((HUGS)))) and take care of yourself. :)

Pehaps consider becoming a Dental Hygenist. They pull in 60k a year working 3 days a week here in Colorado Springs with no weekends no nights no Call days No Holidays and a heck of a lot less health risk exposures. I think average new grad BSN makes 30k a year accross this country.
