prob insurance? Where do I seek this info, when should I apply and how much is it?

Immediately. However...I've been working 5 months and haven't yet so I don't know the rest of them. I should have it already....but just haven't made the calls.

I too have thought about getting my own personal malpractice insurance. I used to get mine through NSO when I was in nursing school and never had a problem with them, though I never gave them a reason to. I'll probably sign up with them again.

Don't put this off. Get your insurance now. I'm one of those who was glad that I had it when the time came. Nobody who plans to sue you will call you on the phone ahead of time and tell you to go get insurance while they wait to file their lawsuit. You can be sued for occurrences in the past. So if your policy goes into effect tomorrow, you are only covered from tomorrow, unless you specify with your insuring company that you want coverage to start with a prior date. Ask the agent to explain to you the difference between event based and time period based coverage. Don't leave any of this to chance.

I agree with what the last poster said. Don't leave it to chance .I got mine right away from NSO - it's not a lot of money to sign up, and definitely a necessity, especially given the unpredictability of our jobs.

Yes - get it now. Even as a student, I'm required to have it - the deans don't make any bones about it - we need to have insurance. People are just far too litigious these days, and lawyers will cast a wide net and put anyone's name in a lawsuit. Not to scare...

(P.S. This is one thing we have to change in this country - the litigiousness in health care.... But that's another story & that bright day will take a long time coming. In the meantime, get your insurance!)

Yesterday.....Besides professional liability I would also check out an umbrella liability policy through your homeowners policy....In other words "fix your roof before it rains..."

We have had several classes from legal professionals, and they all have recommended not getting malpractice insurance as a non advanced practice nurse (It is a must for APNs).

The reason they always give is the lawyers follow the money when determining whom to sue....Hospitals, physicians, the people with malpractice insurance etc.

I think that I will at the very least carry an umbrella policy through my homeowners...
