Hello Floridians! I am currently living in the rural northeast area of pa. My husband is an engineer in a neighboring state. He was asked if he wanted to relocate to the tampa area. I am an RN with one year med/surg experience and one year psych experience. Could you tell me a little about the Tampa area? We are a quiet, Catholic, conservative couple with an infant and a rottweiler. Would we fit in? Are there a lot of hospitals/psych hospitals to choose from? How hard is it to find employment? What is the pay like? What is the cost of living? I currently make a little over $20 an hour, which seems to be the norm around here. Housing is pretty cheap, a 3 bedroom /1.5 bath pretty big house with a 1/2 acre yard goes for about $90,000. He would get a little pay raise and have moving costs paid for. What is the weather like? How is traffic? I am not one for traffic or noise. Are there any quiet less populated area's outside of Tampa but still close enough to commute? I am used to fridgid weather and lots of snow. I don't wear a jacket or pullover unless it is well below 30 degrees. Everyone here has a 4wd vehicle. I would prefer things to be a lot warmer. I am wondering if it would be worth the move.

The housing situation in the area is out of control price wise. It's hard to find a decent home and not pray a huge amount. A house like you described would go for about 150,000 to 200,000 here. If you're a quiet conservative couple you might look to the surrounding areas like Spring Hill, Florida or Pasco County that has more affordable housing.

The pay here is fairly similar to what you're making, maybe a little more.

I think the housing prices in these parts are even higher than that. The median sale price went up 33% just this past year alone!:eek:

There's a Seminole in Pinellas county. There's also a Seminole county. I should think prices would be a bit higher in Pinellas because the county is totally full with nowhere left to build, but I'm no expert.

No better in Seminole. As was mentioned Pinellas County is built to where all available land is occupied. It has the greatest population density in Florida and is the third largest population wise. 900,000 people cramed in this little peninsula. It's one big megaopolis.

On the other hand, those who can afford real estate are making a good investment. I could sell my 3 bedroom, 2-car garage home for $90,000 more than I paid for it five years ago. But wouldn't be able to afford a comparable home, so I'm not selling.

Actually, homes in Seminole tend it be a little more expensive then some other areas of Pinellas County. We bought a house in West St. Petersburg that was around the same specs as a Seminole home but 20-30k cheaper. Seminole is a very nice area though if you can afford to live there. It's not as crowed as Largo, St. Pete, Countryside and Palm Harbor.
