Roll call: Hillsborough Community College Spring 2011

U.S.A. Florida

I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.

My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*

I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)

Wish me luck!!!

Mine just cleared two days ago. How much longer before we get our letters? It's killing me.

Mine hasn't cleared either. I dropped my application off a week ago, so maybe that is why...

Mines cleared on Friday. I am so nervous and very worried. I know this is asked alot, but can I ask around what GPA everyone here has? I know mines is on the low side (depending on how they calculate it) and I'm curious as to how I rank comparatively. Thanks. And good luck to everyone.

hi amgonzal!

i turned in my application in early may and my check just cleared june 1st.

as far as my gpa for the nursing pre-requisites, i have a 3.72. i hate the fact that they count a class that was taken over 25 years ago when i did not care about college, i got a c in english. if i retook it now i would have an a...... and a 4.0 gpa. based on prior semesters the applicant cut-off on average has been about a 3.45 gpa. hopefully i should be accepted as long as i turned in all my documents correctly and the applicant pool doesn't increase with people with 4.0 gpa's.... you never know..... the waiting game is a killer!

I know this may be a bit early to ask, but has anyone heard when the committee meets to review the applications for the Spring 2011 term? From what I read on this site, last year they did not meet until September and letters went out toward the end of September....

i turned my app in on the 20th and my check still hasnt cleared but i did get my self-addressed postcard back so i know that they did get mine. i have been checking everything everyday and today i noticed two different audits in the "progress toward degree" ... does anyone else have this or know about it? are they just checking to see if we have prereqs done? also it said 22 cr hrs and i was sure it was 21? my gpa was still the same though...this is only making my stomach knots worse! im so not good at waiting in the dark!:hdvwl:

Amgonzal- my prereq gpa is a 3.71 and the gpas used are calculated only from a&p 1-2+ labs, enc1101, mac1105,micro + lab, syg2000 = 21 cr hrs; also i had been told that the last cut off was 3.41-ish and that often less people apply for spring vs fall. hope this helps and good luck!

HI!

The only thing I have taken at HCC is Chemistry and although I submitted all of my transcripts it do not show how many credit I have in total or the fact that I have completed the prereqs required for nursing. I also show "progress toward degree" tab but there is nothing there. Under my profile it does show that I am an applicant in the Health Science Program. Did you take all of your classes at HCC? My stomach will be in knots too until we hear something....

yes i took all of my classes at hcc... and unfortunatly from what ive gathered, it is true that we wont know anything until september.

Are any u taking nutrition as a supporting class in the fall

Hey everyone, thanks for replying...now I'm even more nervous than I was before.

The problem with calculating my GPA is that I'm not quite sure how they will do it. Do they calculate +/- grades?

Also I took Micro twice...I didn't know about the Florida law stating that a class couldn't be retaken if passed, So I have the original at USF, an the one from HCC. But the course number are different, I think USF it is like MCB2000 ( it was called microbiology for health professionals) and at HCC it is MCB 1000....all of my other courses match exactly.

Also if they do take the two grades do they average them together or just take the best one. I'll post my Grades below, and if someone can help me calculate it that would be wonderful. Thanks :)

@ USF

ENC1011 A-

Sociology A-

College Algebra (EEEKKK) D+

Micro for health profesionals C

Micro for health prof. Lab B

@ HCC

Anat I B

Anat Lab B

Micro B

Cont from above.

College algebra retake A

Anat II A

Hi Amgonzal,

I got this from HCC Website, adjunct instructor guide. To calculate your GPA:

For each class multiply number of credits by your grade No. equivalent

Example:

English I 3 credits, your grade (A or 4) 3X4 = 12pts

Sociology 3 credits, your grade (B or 3) 3X3 = 9pts

Algebra 3 credits, your grade (C or 2) 3X2 = 6pts

Micro Lab 1 credit, your grade (D or 1) 1X1 = 1pts

Micro I 3 credits, your grade (B or 3) 3XX = 9pts

Then, take total pts, in this case 35 and divide by total credits, in this case 13 for a GPA of 2.69

I'm not sure how it works for the class you took twice, but I've heard if it's not a failing grade they take the first one. Look on HCC's website, I think that it's covered in the adjunct instructors guide.

I would have calculated your GPA, but I didn't see a grade for Anatomy II or it's lab. Good luck to you :) Your total credit hours should total 21 based on the prereqs.
