Rn moving to fl from nyc after 26 years

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hello Everyone! After 26 years and accomplishing my RN degree here in NYC I'm ready for a change! I'm SOOOO OVER this city! I visited FL a couple of times for vacation and family visits and i love it! I'm looking to move either to the coral springs or fort lauderdale area. Just a few questions....

  1. What major hospitals I can apply for in those areas?
  2. What is the base pay salary for an RN AAS with 3 years of home care experience?
  3. Anything I need to know that will help me get the job?
  4. Are there any RN's that moved to FL and regret making the move? and if so what are the positives & negatives?

Living in Florida is very different from visiting. I have been here for 13 years and cannot wait to leave. You will make considerably less money and although the cost of living is lower than NYC it is not as low as people think. Especially since the pay is less. The cost of food is astronomical here. i paid $9.50 for Peanut Butter the other day. I live a little north of where you plan on moving, so I cannot speak for the hospitals.

I can tell you that I know several RN's with 8 years experience making new grad in other states wages.

There's plenty of hospitals here: North broward, Coral Springs medical, holy cross hospital, broward general, etc.

9.50 for peanut butter? Where did you go? Whole paycheck? (Whole foods)

@coleebee Wow thats a lot for a peanut butter! Im sorry your feel that way about florida, but it goes hand in hand. The fact that I lived here practically my whole life and I want to leave and you want to leave FLorida where you been for 13 years, its safe to say we are ready to try something different. I know living is different from visiting, but Im ready for a change. Thanks for your comment.

@pookyp, Thanks! Do you know the base pay in these hospitals ?

No Publix, and Walmart is only slightly cheaper. It is ridiculous.

Best of luck on your move. I just wanted you to know so you aren't in shock with the pay difference, compared to the high cost of living.

Base pay for an RN with no hospital experience in my neck of the woods is $20-23 an hour. A friend of mine works in Boca Raton and she started out at $24.

OP,

I've lived in Brooklyn, NY all my life and want to move to Fl in a few years myself. An LPN I worked with moved to Pompano Beach from Brooklyn and she loves it. NY is really getting ridiculous right now and will be affordable for the rich and famous ONLY!! Best of luck!!

@akanini Yea ,, You must be blind not to notice whats really going on here,,,In a few years there will be no middle class only rich and poor here in NYC, Is the sad truth. Thats why a lot of New Yorkers are moving to other states for better opportunities. NY is expensive even me getting payed $35-$40 per hour no kids, 2 jobs I cant afford a decent apartment in a nice area and leave check by check. And a lot of my friends are in this same situation. Unless you leaving off the system or you wealthy and I mean very rich, your not going no where here, your just gonna be stuck in twilight zone of the same routine life everyday. Who in their right minds live like this ?? not me ! Reality check hit me along time ago, moving on. Theres other states to explore!

@ chocolate_rn85 I recently moved from NYC to florida in January, it is true you do get paid less than New York but I still would not go back to New York to take care of 8 and 9 patients. Here where I work take care of 4 to 5 patients, before moving here I hated nursing and I was ready to give it up I love my job now and the organization I work for. I was in the same situation as you were working 2 jobs to make ends meet, don't be discouraged for what others may say since your experience living in Florida could be a positive one.

I am not an RN. I am currently in school, first semester to become one. I moved from Brooklyn to Boca Raton 5 years ago so I can comment on the living aspect not the job market. We moved down here to help out some family and they have recently passed.

It is very expensive to live down here too. Gas, food, rent, etc.... is all comparable to NY. Unless you are talking about Manhattan then yes it is cheaper down here. Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island in my opinion is just as expensive as Florida.

Luckily for me my husband works from home and kept his job in NY otherwise we couldn't make it with Florida salaries. I like living here for the weather, beaches, cleanliness and open spaces. Other than that it is pretty bad and we will probably relocate after I graduate. The people seem to be friendlier in NY if you can believe that haha.

I miss the food and the change of seasons in NY. Of course with both states there are good and bad aspects. I hear nightmares about pay and no unions for nurses down here so I would definitely do a lottttttttt of research before making the big move. If it wasn't for family I would of been out of here 4 years ago haha. It is a great place to visit, just like NY, but both are very hard to live in.

I hope this helps a little and good luck with everything!

Rachel

I paid $9 for bacon the other day lol

@piel_canela26 I totally agree with you, And that is the advice I gave myself two years ago when i made the decision to move to FL. Everyones experience and outcome is different in life. A little knowledge and information from others experience doesn't hurt. Thank you so much for your comment!

Question,,,,,

what hospital are you working for? Salary?
