PBSC Fall 2015 Nursing

U.S.A. Florida

Published

This thread is for those applying to the Palm Beach State College Nursing Program for Fall 2015. Here, we can discuss program requirements, HESI prep, information session updates, and encourage each other on this journey to nursing school!

About me: My name is Sarah, and this will be my first time applying to nursing school. I have a bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the University of Kansas (class of 2006). After college, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a couple years before applying to medical school. Once my husband and I started a family, I decided nursing would be a better field for me. I've been a stay-at-home mom since 2009 and have been finishing up my pre-requisites and co-requisites in the meantime. I've taken the HESI and am all caught up for now (that is, unless I now need to take statistics in the spring).

Good luck everyone!

From my experience, I took the Hesi 3 times and got an 85, 89 and 88. The questions actually got harder on mine. The AP was impossible and I got As in 1 & 2. The grammar was tougher too. I think it's the luck of the draw. They take your highest so if you can afford it an extra point is worth it.

Thanks, good to know. Honestly the biggest cause of hesitation for me is the nearly 50 dollar fee PBSC charges just to sit an exam :/ but maybe it will be worth a try. I hadn't actually finished A&P I or II or Micro when I took my HESI. My preparation was mostly self-study for the A&P and bio sections. So maybe now that I have more classroom experience, it would be worth another try.

Just to get you guys ready for the anxiety, be prepared to wait for acceptance/denial notification. Fall 2015 waited 5 weeks 1 day, spring 2015 has now surpassed that and will more than likely hit the 6 week mark or longer. Nobody will give you a straight or consistent answer when you call, so be prepared for that frustration as well. Good luck to all of you. And if you have the ability, take pharm before 1st semester. Your sanity will thank you.

Oh man, what a cluster!!! Thanks for the heads up. I know that will send my anxiety through the roof, for sure. Hopefully next cycle won't be as bad, but I won't hold my breath. I'll just brace for a long wait and hope to be pleasantly surprised if it's not as bad.

I submitted my course appeal for statistics last week (since that will replace nutrition for a point on the application next cycle), so assuming I don't have to take that in the spring, I will try to take pharm!

Oh, and congrats on getting in, jcol1460 :)

Hi all, just checking in to say hello and see how everyone is doing.

Unforunately, I wasn't able to get into pharm for the spring. Good news though: my statistics course appeal was approved - yay! However, it doesn't show up on my interactive degree audit in pantherweb, as the new requirements/point system don't seem to be updated there. Does anyone know where I can find the new requirements/point system online or have a copy they could post here? The last info session I went to was before the changes became "official" so I just would like to see it to be certain.

Thanks and happy new year to all!

If you pm me your email address I'll send you what the spring point system was. It may change again for the fall though due to the changes for mandatory classes they're putting into play.

Thanks. I'm assuming the spring point system still lists nutrition rather than statistics? If so, then I've already seen that one. Everyone keeps saying that statistics will replace it for the point, but I have yet to see it in writing. And, quite frankly, I find it frustrating because I feel there is already a lack of nutritional education requirements in health care. I feel that statistics are important, too, but why take one away to add another? Anyway, I digress...another issue for another day... :)

However, if you do have information on the NEW new requirements (hah), let me know. I am sure they will be giving that information out at the next info session, but I really don't want to have to go back down to LW for another one since I've already attended two. But if there are that many changes, perhaps I'd better.

FYI - I found a link that lists all the upcoming information sessions, as well as the updated co-requisites (it lists STA2023 instead of HUN1201). The info sessions are as follows:

I haven't found an updated point sheet reflecting these changes, however, so if anyone has that info, please feel free to post it here! I will check with Latisha again and see if she can send it to me.

Hi ilavarachi, :)

How did you study for the Hesi? Did you use the book by Elsevier?

I'd like to know because I recently began studying for the Hesi but I just started chem and A&P 2 today (new semester). I've read online that other students have taken the Hesi without necessarily having all of their pre reqs done, and have scored well. My plan is to submit an application by this June to start fall 2015 (that is if I am accepted and if they'll still accept my nutrition credit).

Thank you for your help

Ktinamac :)

the new new application won't be released until closer to the due date, so i doubt you'd be able to get your hands no that one. so if you've seen the one with the new hesi and education point structure, then you've seen the one we filled out. we weren't aware of all the changes (and they weren't announced) until just before the applications came out 2.5-3 weeks before they were due. at welcome night, they said 500 applied.

get ready for frustration and poor communication. i don't know if they are purposely being vague or what the method to the madness of not answering direct questions unless pushed for an answer, but i'm sure there is some reason. stats will replace nutrition because it is a requirement for a bachelors degree. since the field moving towards bsn as being entry level, they are getting you ready for that eventual transition.

good luck with your last regular semester of freedom

I am working on my pre-requisites now and I am hoping to apply for the Fall 2016 program. The points system is interesting but I can see why people get anxiety about getting into the program.

Hi all,

Just checking in. It's been a very crazy month for me, so it's been a while since I've even had a moment to check the board! Jcol1460, thank you so much for the honest feedback :) It does sound like things will be quite frustrating, but at least we have an expectation of how it can be going into this process. I, too, have been having trouble getting direct answers.

I know that the application itself for Fall 2015 won't be out until at least April (I believe that is an estimate I was given at one point, which makes sense since the application will be due June 1). However, I just wish that there was some place I could get my hands on the new requirements without having to attend yet ANOTHER info session (this would make #3 for me, #2 in the last year alone). I wonder if part of the reason they are so vague on the information is that perhaps they aren't entirely sure and they are allowing for last minute changes? Gah! It just makes me nervous....because from what Latisha told me last summer, I am right on track and don't have to worry...but...the requirements keep changing!

I finally did see this on the Nursing page today: :"Also starting June 1, 2015,

the co-requisite Elements of Nutrition (HUN1201) will be replaced with Statistics (STA2023)."Good to see *that* in writing. However, I am still nervous because even though the university e-mailed me saying that my STA2023 transfer WAS approved, it shows up nowhere on my transcript or interactive degree audit, and in fact, my original transfer course is still listed as "not accepted toward degree." Nothing like waiting til the last minute, eh? Ahhhh.

Trying my best to make the most of my last semester of freedom, but this stuff just gives me anxiety already. For those already enrolled, how is nursing school going? Any pointers? I hope it is going well for you all!!! I am sure I speak for all of us future applicants when I say we greatly appreciate your input and advice :)

Jcol1460 - your comment about transitioning toward a BSN got me thinking, so I decided to "degree shop" a BS in nursing in the interactive degree audit. Lo and behold, there's my statistics course transfer credits :) A bit of a relief. Hooray! It also gave me a bit of an idea of what's required for a BSN. My eventual goal is to see what I need to do to "fill in the blanks" to acquire a BSN. I am sure many more course appeals are on the horizon, hah, and of course a few other courses to take. Thanks again :)

Welcome, imthebriman1! I'm glad you found this group. I spent a good deal of time on the Spring 2015 board getting to know people and asking questions. Their input has been so helpful, so I am hoping we can do the same for you. Of course, as you can see, it seems as the requirements keep changing almost every application cycle, so it's good to keep on top of what's going on. Good luck with your pre-reqs and let me know if we can be of any help.
