PBSC Fall 2015 Nursing

This thread is for those applying to the Palm Beach State College Nursing Program for Fall 2015. Here, we can discuss program requirements, HESI prep, information session updates, and encourage each other on this journey to nursing school!

About me: My name is Sarah, and this will be my first time applying to nursing school. I have a bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the University of Kansas (class of 2006). After college, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a couple years before applying to medical school. Once my husband and I started a family, I decided nursing would be a better field for me. I've been a stay-at-home mom since 2009 and have been finishing up my pre-requisites and co-requisites in the meantime. I've taken the HESI and am all caught up for now (that is, unless I now need to take statistics in the spring).

Good luck everyone!

Sarah my advice to you is get pharmacology out of the way before you start. I see the people in the program that have pharm too and it is tough. Glad I am taking it alone.

Thanks :) I had been contemplating taking pharm in the spring, as well. Since I took biostatistics at KU, I am hoping I can do a course re-evaluation and have that count toward my stats credit.

As for pharm, if I recall correctly, I won't be able to register for it until all the nursing students have a chance to register, right? When should I check?

No. I registered the day it was available. If they don't have enough spots they can ask you to drop but a bunch of us on here got in. They won't open it until the nursing students get their approval letters and can register for classes. Just keep checking daily. That's what I did and on a Saturday they opened and I got one.

I am applying for this term and am nervous about a slightly low GPA. I will, however, have all the classes except Critical Thinking completed, and I had a 94 on the HESI. So I hope it evens out. Good luck to everyone!

All that matters is your overall points.

All that matters is your overall points.

Yes! Just hoping the points balance out.

Based on the Spring 2015 application I have 24 points. Wondering if it would be worth it to take the HESI again and try to get into the 10 point category (96 and up) instead of the 9 point category I am in now.

We still haven't heard where our cutoff Iis for spring so you can gauge it on that. You can always walk in and take it, they use your highest score.

I know what you mean. I got a 95.43% on the HESI. For the old point system, that would have been 10 points on the application, but now it's just 9. I don't know if it is really worth trying to take it again for the extra point. At a certain point, I wonder how much of it is just the luck of the draw with the questions.

I just submitted my course reevaluation appeal today for statistics (since I took Biostatistics when I got my Bachelors Degree). Once that goes through (or if I just have to take it in the spring), I should have 27.9 points.

From my experience, I took the Hesi 3 times and got an 85, 89 and 88. The questions actually got harder on mine. The AP was impossible and I got As in 1 & 2. The grammar was tougher too. I think it's the luck of the draw. They take your highest so if you can afford it an extra point is worth it.

Just to get you guys ready for the anxiety, be prepared to wait for acceptance/denial notification. Fall 2015 waited 5 weeks 1 day, spring 2015 has now surpassed that and will more than likely hit the 6 week mark or longer. Nobody will give you a straight or consistent answer when you call, so be prepared for that frustration as well. Good luck to all of you. And if you have the ability, take pharm before 1st semester. Your sanity will thank you.

Thanks, good to know. Honestly the biggest cause of hesitation for me is the nearly 50 dollar fee PBSC charges just to sit an exam :/ but maybe it will be worth a try. I hadn't actually finished A&P I or II or Micro when I took my HESI. My preparation was mostly self-study for the A&P and bio sections. So maybe now that I have more classroom experience, it would be worth another try.
