PBSC Fall 2015 Nursing

U.S.A. Florida

Published

This thread is for those applying to the Palm Beach State College Nursing Program for Fall 2015. Here, we can discuss program requirements, HESI prep, information session updates, and encourage each other on this journey to nursing school!

About me: My name is Sarah, and this will be my first time applying to nursing school. I have a bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the University of Kansas (class of 2006). After college, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a couple years before applying to medical school. Once my husband and I started a family, I decided nursing would be a better field for me. I've been a stay-at-home mom since 2009 and have been finishing up my pre-requisites and co-requisites in the meantime. I've taken the HESI and am all caught up for now (that is, unless I now need to take statistics in the spring).

Good luck everyone!

Thank you sooo much for all the information! I will be going to the one in April but a little but of stress was taken off of my shoulders knowing the total number of points being accepted!! I just am a little nervous because I have not taken Chemistry yet... I signed up to CLEP out of it but heard it was extremely hard :-(. Also, I have to take the HESI still. I am planning on taking that when I travel down to Florida in two weeks. Fingers crossed I do well! I just took the TEAS test up here in NJ (equivalent to the HESI) and did well so I am hoping it is similar to the HESI. I am just nervous about the Chemistry part. With Chemistry..does it require a LAB along with the lecture?? At the school I go to here in NJ, Chemistry is ONLY offered with a lab. I really would rather just take the Chemistry lecture if that is all we need. No use is paying more for the lab if that is not needed. I will be asking all of these questions when I meet with them at the school but it would be great to have an idea of what I am coming into. Thanks soo much in advanced!

You're welcome! Glad I could be of some help.

As for the chemistry class, the lab is not required. However, it doesn't hurt to take it. Latisha mentioned last night that although it is not required, it is recommended. I think it may help cover a lab credit if you decide to get a BSN. Also, just a heads up, it is good to make sure that it is equivalent to what PBSC requires for their chemistry class because they can be quite picky. If it doesn't do an even transfer, you may just need to do a course appeal. I did, and I was able to use my organic chemistry lecture in place of their chemistry credit (since my general chemistry credits were expired!). But if it transfers right over to their equivalent, you don't need to worry about it. I think she said last night that you can't use the CLEP for chemistry...so you may want to check on that!

Good luck on the HESI! Have you taken any chemistry before, even in high school? There is a chemistry section on the HESI. I remember stressing about it because I just don't really like general chem, but it was really, really basic stuff - think chemical bonds, properties, periodic table, etc. If you study what is provided in the HESI review book, you should be good. I used this one: Admission Assessment Exam Review, 3e: 9781455703333: Medicine & Health Science Books @ Amazon.com

It was really helpful and worth the money, but of course, you could check the library for it first.

I have taken chemistry in HS and also Chemistry was a big part of A&P1 and am learning lots about Chem in Microbiology, which I am taking right now. Honestly, I don't think I will be taking the CLEP for Chem anyways because apparently it is ridiculously hard. I actually just bought that HESI exam review book last night! I'll be taking it in two weeks so I will be studying non-stop. I am assuming that since Chemistry is not able to be accepted as a CLEP, I won't be able to apply for the June 1st deadline....

I am trying to do a course appeal for DEP2004. I have taken many classes during my Bachelor degree that seem to cover everything that the course description for DEP2004. Advice:: Where would I drop that off?? I honestly have never been to the PBSC campus.. It will be my first time going there when I come back down in April. You have Noooo idea how awesome it is to talk to a fellow prospect nursing student at PBSC so thank you soo much!!

Unfortunately, you're right - you will have to take chemistry this summer in order for your grades to post for the October 1st deadline.

As for doing a course appeal for DEP2004, it's worth a shot! However, I will say that is one of them that they are notoriously picky about. I took general psych when I got my bachelor's, and they accepted that as a substitute for PSY2012 right off the bat (no course appeal necessary). If you feel you have a similar psych course or combination of courses that could substitute, submit the official course descriptions, and if possible, syllabi along with an explanation on your course appeal. The forms can be found here: http://www.palmbeachstate.edu/admissions/Documents/coursereevaluation.pdf

You will need to submit the forms to the Registrar's Office. I have done most of my paperwork at the Palm Beach Gardens campus, but I would assume you just drop it off at the Lake Worth campus Registrar's Office when you are there. Sorry, I am not really familiar with that campus yet, but I am sure someone there could point you in the right direction.

Glad I could help! This is just what keeps me busy while I wait. Of course, I just submitted my application on Wednesday, and I've already hit a couple of snags (need to re-apply to the school because I haven't been in classes since last summer; transcripts got all jumbled up and now say I am missing classes...all sorts of fun!) so it is DEFINITELY good to be prepared and allow time for these types of issues.

Oh, I forgot to add...if your course appeal doesn't go through, you could easily take the class online. It was the first class I took at PBSC. I took the online course with Linda Wechter Ashkin and it was really easy (as long as you can write a couple 1-page essays every week and do a bit of reading). I enjoyed it. It looks like she is teaching this summer but not online. There are, however, a few other professors teaching it online this summer if you want to check it out.

Wow, I am so happy I found this group! You've really helped me out a lot... I am definitely going to look into a summer course (or 2). Hopefully I will be able to get down there and take Chemistry and DEP2004. I'll give the course appeal a shot but worse comes to worse...I'll suck it up and take it online! I am super excited to head down there in two weeks and talk to someone about everything. Best of luck! Looks like I'll have to try and make the October deadline but fingers crossed!!

Hey guys, just wanted to give a heads up based on my experience :) As you know, I submitted my application last Wednesday. On Friday, the college called and said I needed to reapply to the school because I haven't had any classes since last summer. No big deal, I did that. Then, when I went to check my interactive degree audit and transcripts, one of my classes (a transfer credit for which a course appeal had been granted 2 years ago) suddenly disappeared. My transcript now shows that my pre-requisites are incomplete. After getting bounced back and forth between advising and registration, I am still waiting to hear back. I am sure it was just a computer error (I've had issues with that credit in the past) but just wanted to share my advice: be sure to keep a close eye on your transcripts after you submit your application! The woman I spoke to in registration said that the submission of my application triggered the change. I am probably one of the "lucky" few this happens to, but again, just wanted to give a heads up :) Good luck!

Atleast you have plenty of time to figure that out!! I really think I'll be applying next year :-( I signed up for DEP2004 in the summer.. I will probably have to take Chem1032 in Fall 2015... I wish you the best of luck!!!

Hi all! I have started a Facebook group for the Fall 2015 applicants so we may reach a wider audience. You can join the group here:

Also, an update on the transcript situation....as it turns out, some things can be shuffled around and look a little funny in the period between application submission and processing (especially if you have some issues with transfer credits, course appeal /re-evaluations, etc.). My advisor said it should all fall into place once the application is processed and is in the limited access system, but just something to keep an eye out for. She said the applications that are submitted will start to be processed around the end of the semester. If you've submitted your application, that would be a good time to check Panther Web for your limited access application status - on the yellow banner at the top, hover over "Records", then click on "Limited Access Application Status." Whew...back to waiting :)

One thing to keep in mind is how the testing style of pharmacology can make it very difficult for pre nursing students. There is a lot of nursing process in this class which can be confusing if you haven't learned this or even heard of it. I took pharm with my first semester nursing courses and it wasn't so bad...

Hi! I'm just jumping on this wild ride! I signed up for some online classes (pre-req) for this Fall. I'm hoping to take the Hesi and Ace exam next summer. I'm an LPN now so hopefully I will be able to transition into the 2nd Semester. I'm planning on taking the Nursing Core classes online also and am very curious to hear how the clinicals are scheduled in. I have to balance a full time job and kids. I think there's supposed to be (2) 6 hour clinicals every week for Semester II? I know I've got a long way to go but I was trying to figure it all out to determine if it's possible to go Full time. Do you have a choice regarding times and days of clinicals? Can you do them both in the same day (12 hr)? Do they offer Saturday clinicals? When you say you are at school from 7a - 7p on Wednesdays, what is that for? How long are the skills checkoffs? I really appreciate all of the information you have shared (and others as well) ...it really helps to begin to work it all out in your head. Thanks again for any advice! :)

@2sandz to answer your questions. No you cant do your clinicals the same day. Semester 2 is monday and tuesday either evening or morning. If you are going to work full time I will tell it will be difficult. I got all As but worked only 3 days a week and 2nd semester is much tougher with a lot more work. the only saturday clinicals are for evening and weekend student but you would have to start from the beginning and that would take 7 semesters. they only do thursdays and saturdays. I was at school all day wednesday because I had skills lab from 9-1130 and then we would practice the skill and study and would check off the next day. The actual checkoff is only a half hour if you don't need to practice but most like to get there early and go over their skill and practice a few times and get set up. This semester the lectures are 3 hours twice a week. Lecture is a 7 credit class so it is equivalent of more than two classes basically, lots of reading.

@cgambino70 Thank you! It really does sound like it's next to impossible. :banghead: I don't have a choice though....I have to work full time...and I REALLY want to do this. I almost want to start reading the material now so I can prepare for it.... if that's even possible.
