Specializes in LTC, Agency, HHC.

Hi I have a quick question....my local hospital has an opening in med evac and it says they take new grads....from what I have read this is absolutely uncommon. Why would they take a new grad when even our local burn unit won't take a new grad? Surely they aren't flying with patients....

Specializes in ED, trauma.

Ground transport maybe? Or maybe they are thinking new grad RN with EMT/Medic experience??

What state is this?

EMT/Medic isn't a requirement they list.....the job description is really vague. I am in Colorado.

Can you copy and paste just the listing.

I doubt it would be because of being an EMT or Paramedic since an RN would be held accountable for the scope of practice which is more extensive.

Specializes in ED, trauma.

" Experience must include working in an acute care setting within the past 12 months as a Registered Nurse in the specialty area."

Seems like they want more experience than a new grad. I guess stocking with 1 yr experience and then transitioning after a year? That's a strange posting, definitely needs more clarification.

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.

I have a question...is your hospital Banner Registry and Travel???

Banner Registry and Travel positions require a minimum of one year experience in an acute care hospital setting. Experience must include working in an acute care setting within the past 12 months as a Registered Nurse in the specialty area.
Your post of the summary also states
positions require a minimum of one year experience in an acute care hospital setting.
which excludes you as a new grad.

New grads historically DO NOT get hired for any flight crews as this is a highly skilled area of nursing that REQUIRES pre-existing knowledge of critical care.

Something doesn't sound right here.

Specializes in Peds/Neo CCT,Flight, ER, Hem/Onc.

The job description doesn't sound at all like a "med-evac" position. Are you sure that was the title of the position?

Specializes in Emergency Department.

Unfortunately, I just don't see a new grad without any significant experience as a Paramedic being accepted into the program. However, they may have some kind of training pipeline that results in getting at least a year of critical care experience before being "graduated" to the transport side of the program. Also, if they say they accept new grads, be very wary of that... Not that it's a bad thing, just that you should be very careful.

I think it is a generic Banner ad since almost all the other positions on their website say the same thing. There is no specific job description.

Specializes in oncology, MS/tele/stepdown.

I applied to a job posting for flight nursing that was willing to accept new grads; the way I interpreted the posting, they would consider a new grad if they had appropriate resources to train at that time, but they would prefer an experienced nurse. I would think all of these types of positions would want someone with experience, but that's just me. I never heard back regarding that particular job posting, shock surprise.

This is for a Banner hospital here in CO....they have a float pool that they call "registry".... And, I know new grads don't get hired on flight crews....doesn't make sense to me, either.
