feeling like a failure

I graduated from a prestigious nursing school with a gpa higher than 3.5, so I would not need anyones help. I passed my nclex before all my friends, and was interviewed for a job before them also.

Two weeks before my nclex, I was interviewed for the residency program of my dreams. The interview took place in June, and since the program wasn't scheduled to begin in September they told me "SPEND THE NEXT FEW MONTHS RELAXING, THIS WILL BE YOUR LAST OPPORTUNITY FOR A WHILE."

......So i relaxed, and waited.. Still hadn't heard from them by mid July... was starting to get concerned... Called human resources, emailed the nurse talent recruiter...NOTHING..needless to say, they NEVER contacted me back.

Now, all my friends have jobs and I am still unemployed. I am SO ANGRY that I allowed myself to feel so comfortable with what was said at the interview that I didn't continue to apply for other programs. I lost over a month where I could have been sending out applications. I feel so dumb for allowing myself to feel secure enough to listen to them.

It sounds to me like you're more upset and jealous that your friends got a job before you. It has nothing to do being a failure. I don't think it has anything to do "allowing yourself to feel secure" either. All you need to do is keep applying until you get hired. It's simple. Hold your head high and try again. And until you have that official job offer in hand (written!), never assume you have a position. Even then, there are still a few hoops to jump through- the preemployment physical, drug screen, nicotine test...

Some employers won't hire anyone who smokes. They include a nicotine test as part of the preemployment requirements. Some places may not include it; other places may have even more requirements that must be met.

That's true. My hospital has a no smoking policy. No hiring for smokers

Graduating and passing NCLEX is one thing, but to land a job is another. You can have the highest GPA, but it really does not matter that much when you are applying for jobs. There are so many hoops to go through like the interview, drug testing, a behavioral test and a test they conduct for their facilities for competency. So don't take any offense to it just trying to help. You are not a failure so keep trying but prepare for different things ahead of you. After you do get the job, you are the new person so you have those hoops to go through and then you get to know people. You see who you can trust or ask for help, plus what is expected of you and how to get things done. Keep trying and you will land a job. You will learn many new things about yourself and how strong you are.
