Chemistry?! Pls help

Hi,

the reason why I'm not posting in the pre-nursing forum is because I want to hear from people who already went through nursing school to find out who of you has taken chemistry in College (as a prereq?) and how it helped (if it did?). The reason for my question is, that chemistry is NOT one of my prereqs, only A&P 1 and 2 and Micro (and of course all the other ones like psych, English etc...) I had chemistry in high school but I don't remember anything. Did you need it for any classes ? Nursing school ? PLease help, I still have time to take the class.

Thanks,

Julia

Are you enrolled in an ADN program?? IMHO...take the chemistry class...you will have to take it if you plan on getting your BSN. Get it out of the way now.;) My diploma program required chem I & II!

i would have to agree, chemistry was not required for my adn; so of course i didn't take it...(i hated the thought of taking it). but, looking back; had i, i would of been a much stronger candidate to get excepted, not only in my own program, but i would have been able to apply to 3 other schools. if your already accepted into a program, then its up to you...see if its worth it. i plan to get my bsn, but it still would not have been worth it for me, because i just found out i'm already over the allowed credits to transfer, so even if i took it i would not be able to transfer it over to the bsn. however, thats my suitation, it may be different for you. as far as it helping in nursing, it does i think a little..many labs, and drugs use chemistry symbols..or what ever they're called, i.e. k+, mso4, ca+, fes04...some i knew just from taking a&p, some i had no idea, but my fellow classmate who had taken chem, did now. there maybe more ways it helps, but i don't really now, since i didn't take it. i did make it thru- without it, but classes like that can only make you stronger. if your able to take it without killing yourself..i.e. it doesn't conflict with other classes and pre-req's than i say go for it. you can always get tutoring, or study groups to get through. if you can do a&p and micro, you can do chem.

good luck---

Thanks guys!

Well, no, I have not been accepted yet, I just started taking my prereqs. But I know from other pre-nursing students from other colleges that chemistry is one of their prerqs, so I was wondering why my school doesn't require it...and if it will hurt me while in the nursing program...? Do you need it for any of the classes, like Pharmacology...?

I think that one of the benefits of chemistry will be using dimensional analysis ALOT....whether it will help with Pharmacology...I'll find out in the fall.

I took Chem 100 which was basically high school chem, because it was required to have just high-school level chemistry for my program. I hated it, barely passed. I am not one for equations etc.

I got A's and B's in my nursing classes. I found that they taught us what we needed to know but I KNOW that if I'd been stronger in chem, I would have figured out the fluid/electrolyes easier. So even tho it isn't the most fun elective, I would take it.

If you'd like to go on and get your BSN, I'd recommend Chemistry, in fact, they'll require it. Some ADN schools offer a class below General Chemistry for their students, but as I mentioned, if you want to get your BSN, generally you'll want to take Gen. Chem.

go for it while you can!

Lostinparadise,

The most of chemistry that you'll probably see in nursing school is acid-base balance and fluids and electrolytes, and for these I think that many students would benefit from taking at least a basic chemistry course beforehand. The most basic chemistry courses taught in many colleges isn't much more than a revision of high school chemistry, so even if you have forgotten most of it, a lot of it will come back to you when you see it again. If you plan to go for a BSN or any Bachelors degree in the sciences you will definitely need to take at least general chemistry and it makes sense to get it done and out of the way before you start your nursing program.

As for nursing pharmacology, you do not need to know much about chemistry to ace that class.

Lostinparadise,

Can I assume you are talking about St. Pete College's ADN program? I'm curious if their RN to BSN program requires chem since their ADN does not.

I took chemistry for non-science majors the semester before I started nursing classes. It was a HUGE help with pharmacology!!! I was breezing through the calculations while everyone else was ready to drop out.

I will probably take it next summer (2007)....
