I currently teach night classes for a medical assisting program, and became certified to teach CPR students through AHA 6 mo ago. Are there any other opportunities for me outside of a small college to teach healthcare providers to certify them? Instructors are certainly needed to teach and test and you must be certified. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I would like information on how to become an aha instructor. Have been looking into it some of the information is confusing.

you can locate aha an training center using the eccclass connector. when you conductyour initial search, do not select the “view scheduled classes” option. the next screen provides you an opportunityto select the type of class you are searching for, and will provide a listingof training centers with contact information.

Yes, you can open your own shop. Where do you live?

Could you maybe clarify what you mean by shop? Currently I don't know of very many folks who have their own shop as an independently owned and operated business. I'm an LPN in Louisiana. I do know that to contract out independently to teach and certify, some facilities (places of employment, healthcare facilities, fire stations etc) do not have on board the adult, child and infant maniquins, or the manditory rosters, testing materials, student study guide hand books. These are all materials that an instructor must purchase on his/her own Very expensive. Perhaps Miamicpr could share with me the independent concept (your own shop) which is what I am very interested in doing.

I mean you could open your own American Heart Association CPR training site.

You could start off teaching and learning at a local AHA Training Center. Then branch out as an Training Site under that AHA Training Center. Google and download AHA PAM (Program Administration Manual.

Thank you much. This is great initial information. Before I became a certified instructor, I had to recertify my BLS through an RN who did this as a side business. So there are a few folks who recertify, but none I know of who have their own free standing center to do this. It will really require diligent research and knowing the AHA policies and procedures to do it legally. I wish there was a representative at AHA that I could speak to personally, opposed to websites with loads of drop downs and links.

I just finished a CPR instructor course and am certified to teach BLS for Health Care Providers as well as Heartsaver CPR. If anyone on this board teaches CPR, can you PLEASE tell me if you had to purchase any type of liability or any type of insurance to protect yourself. This has been so hard to find out. I plan on teaching CPR independently as I don't have an agency that I work for presently. I will teach from my home, at designated locations, schools, daycare providers homes, employers offices etc.

Hi Barbra, the annoying answer to this question is "it depends." If you work as an employee then you need to see if you are covered by the center. Since you said you want to work independently, then that often means that you need to purchase your own insurance. You really have three options for the insurance problem. First, you could buy your own to protect yourself as an individual. The second option is to form an LLC and practice through your LLC. The LLC rules depend on the state you live in and you need to do research on LLCs before you start. If you don't run your LLC correctly then it won't protect you if you get sued. Finally, you could carry personal liability insurance and have an LLC for the most protection. It really depends on how much protection you want to have from liability. You aren't required to protect yourself at all.

I would suggest contacting your insurance provider concerning an "umbrella" policy. They will tell you if you need a separate type of policy. I know somebody who uses her instructor card to teach the course one on one. I don't know what she uses for the equipment.

In my town there are a few places that offer private on demand CPR classes for those who need it and need it now. I think they charge $100 instead of the usual $60 for group class. Ebay is a pretty good place to find some of the equipment you need for a reasonable price. Craigslist would be a place to start looking for students. It all depends on how much you want to monetize your certification and how much time you have. This was something I was considering but with my other business and my "real" job as a nurse there wasn't much need.

PM if you want I'll give you all my ideas on the subject
