Any entreprenurial nurses out there?

Nurses Entrepreneurs

Published

I just went to a seminar and am all hyped up. I think it is time for us to get down to business. I've been in ICU, management, legal nurse consulting and all that crap for 20 years and think it is time for a change. Anybody out there interested in brainstorming about business ideas? Working for themselves as RN's?

Hi,

Just recently joined & have been dancing all over the sites not sure what to expect

& finally begin thinking to myself___somebody out there as a health care giver

is looking for an alternative to the "HOUSE enviroment" of the Hosp.

Would enjoy engaging in dialogue regarding how we can utilize our

skills, knowledge & experiences to better improve our lives & those we intend to help.

As posted previously, what are your thoughts as mentioned?

This is the time for all entreprenurial nurses to get going, Donald Trump says this is the time.. if you got an idea go for it.. some of us just don't know how to get started, the saying goes if God gives you an idea he'll give you the means to put it in place,

I say these things because I am giving myself a pep talk as well. I want to open up a holistic health clinic but for some reason I think I need to be a NP to do it.. so I am preparing for that now..deep inside I feel I really have enough education, but lack the confidence to move on that dream..without it..

What about starting your own HH business. It doesn't have to be huge, it could be a sole propreitor. I would love to do this after I get my HH exp, but am trying to figure out how to start.

I just posted on the Holistic Nursing forum about something similar.

I am so ready as everyone here is to get out of regular hospital nursing and hostile work enviroments and branch out on my own.

I welcome dialogue and any ideas.

I am currently in Raleigh if anyone wants to meet but at some point will be returning to NY state.

You need to be as specific an you can about what you would sell, what the specific benefits would be to your potential customers, what would they be willing to pay for your training, and where would you find your target market? Starting part time is an excellent idea! It is important to be abel to survive and pay your bills as you are starting your business. Being despairate for business is not attractive.

There are nurses/nurse practitioners around the country who have their own businesses. There is a lot to having a business, and one that supports you.

1. Figure out what you really want to do.

2. Do some research once you have a few ideas. Will it generate an income you can live with/you desire? Will it give you a lifestyle you desire? Is there a market for it?

3. Get use to the idea of talking about $$ and charging for your services. If you don't...you don't have a business.

4. Get some support. There are groups and websites that work with Nurse and Nurse Practitioner Entrepreneurs to help get you going and keep you going. It's hard (nearly impossible) to do this alone.

5. Start reading about business. Start with something like E-Myth by Michael Gerber. Learn about the laws for your location and where your license may/may not restrict you. Look at SCORE.ORG and the SBA.GOV.

Hi I dont want to sound stupid but here goes:

How do I research a particular business, locations , demographics? Are there web sites one goes too ?

I have read MANY business, success type books, finance like the "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" Books. I have even started going to a cash flow game held via meetup.org group.

Is there a Nursing organization that assists people wanting to start their own business?

I know about score.org and sba.org.

Thank you very much for any assistance!

Your questions is not stupid...but the answer is multi-factorial.

There are several places to start out. Certainly SCORE and SBA can help you with doing research and how to start. As far as websites, it really depends on your idea, if you are looking at something local vs global, etc.

Look at: location, demographics, who is buying and who isn't, what you can do that is different from everyone else out there (better service, better product, better presentation). You'll want to niche your idea down (you cannot serve everyone). Look at what it takes to start up and what your likely ROI will be.

Again, unless you want to create a job (and you don't if you have read Kiyosaki's books, I highly recommend Michael Gerber's books and websites.

There are only a few websites geared toward nurses in business that I am aware of.

http://nurse-entrepreneur-network.com/

https://nnba.net/

I'd start with LeaRae (first website) as she has ongoing support for nurses in business.

I also have a website, blog and consulting around business geared toward NPs. We often interview NPs (few times a month on Sundays) on business, and those are open to anyone who wants to listen. You'll likely find ideas here as well. Coming up will be an NP/CDE who does nutrition work.

Thank you for those links!

I am going to look into them, join their mailing lists and join them straightaway!

I am so done with traditional nursing and although realistically I am going to have to find a job when I go home the fact is I am going to agressively educate myself in entrepreneurship so that someday i can work for myself.

Thank you again

I have just applied to Tennessee State to their holistic NP program, I am hoping to open a holistic practice went I finish the program,, I am just waiting to hear if I got in.. I want to offer classes on energy medicine as well as nutrition and other topics of interst..I think the public is looking for other methods to keep themselves healthy and not take so many drugs..I know I am..

I've just joined this forum and would love to brainstorm with others re starting a business. Some of the best small businesses have started with a brain trust of people. Please let me know if you are still interested in this (just noticed your original post date).

Coach Barbara,

I have been a nurse for 3 years, and clocking in and out is not what I would like to do anymore. I would love the idea of working for myself, but I'm not sure how...and you seem very resourceful. I am SO interested in health/wellness (I'd love to start some sort of prevention program for diabetes and heart disease), but everywhere I research, I need a nutrition degree in addition to my nursing degree, and I can't afford three more years of school. How do I do what I love with what I have? I didn't know how to pm you ;-) Thanks for your time. Any other responses are welcome!
