For those of you who recently passed the CEN or are CEN certified...what study materials did you use in ultimately passing the Exam. People say that ENA's 4th Edition of Questions w/ 2 online exams & Sheehy's ER Review is the best combo? What are you thoughts on this? I've got Vonfrolio's CEN DVD videos as well.

I took the CEN about a year ago, I only studied one book after attending a prep review. Which was more of a review than new information (other than the treatment of an iron OD, had no idea..). Personally I looked at the DVDs you had ever so briefly, was not a fan. The only book I recommend to my friends is from http://www.bemetweb.com/ it takes out all the fluff and focuses on core information required on the test. I do not recall a single question on my test that was not covered in this book. It is layed out more like a study guide of bullet information to know than in depth paragraphs full of the normal mode of nursing books. Take a look, everyone that I have loaned my copy to has been more than pleased with their results.

Yeah. I would love to grab a copy of this book. Boswell seems to be tried and true in matching up with the latest exam blue print. I want to be able to take the CEN soon because I had just passed CCRN. I know there's much more to study with the CEN as opposed to what I needed to study for the CCRN, but many of concepts I have learned in CCRN has proved useful, particularly the heavy emphasis on Cardio/Resp. I really want to be able to just add on more to what I already know now and tak the CEN and pass with flying colors. Based on Boswell, he recommends HIS book and ENA's 4th edition of questions to supplement "Exam Mode" studying. Just doing question after question, then reading the rationales.

Took it in 2010. Used lippincott, mark boswell's book and the ena 150 question practice test. Lippincott was ok, mark's book was great and the ena prep test gets you comfortable with how the test looks/feels. Agreed that mark's book covered everything i saw on the test.

What did you use to study for the CCRN? I'm starting to study for it now...

For the CEN, I relied heavily on computer-based lectures and MP3s from Med-Ed. I love me some Jeff Solheim! :D I also had Sheehy's and had just used it as part of my ED nursing fellowship, which included online modules from the ENA that were based on Sheehy's.

Hey, I took a CCRN review courses here in my hospital. But two other materials I had used in passing the CCRN were Laura Gasparis' CCRN CRAM Review DVDs and Dennison's Pass CCRN (ONLY THE CD though, for practicing questions).

So you think Boswell & ENA's 4th is no good? You did the whole Med-Ed & Sheehy route. I think they are all good. I just have to familiarize myself still more with Boswell & Sheehy materials. Sheehy is coming out with a 7th edition of the ER text in Feb 2012.

No, I didn't say the other stuff was no good, just that I used Med-Ed and Sheehy more. I had Boswell's review book toward the very end of my studies and didn't have as much time with it.

Hey there, I have my test the beginning of Jan, and starting to freak out! I watched Vonfrolios videos, but they are out of date, since the content changed in July. I have been using the exam book from the ENA website with 5 exams in the book and 2 online. I also bought the core curriculum, but finding that it is a really hard book to follow. I think I will buy the videos from Med Ed, watch them, and just keep doing the exams over and over again. I just don't know what else to do. I can't wait until this test is over!

Passed mine in 2011 right before they changed the content. I used Med Ed online class and the ENA book. Liked actually watching lectures online, I'm more of a visual learner.

I took the CEN today after doing 3 "PASS CEN" exams online last night (bought the book, went to the website, used the activation code inside cover, and activated the online material). Otherwise did basically no studying. I work in a busy ED and have been a nurse for 2.5 years. Passed the exam with flying colors. If you're a decent test taker, pay attention to ABC's, and have had ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and ENPC, you should be fine!

I also took the CCRN exam today after I finished the CEN, and for the record found the CEN to be a little bit harder, likely because of the vast breadth of material covered. CCRN was "softer" in content (more touchy feely questions), and more redundant. Passed CCRN as well. Trust me, if you use your brain and are a decent test taker you will likely pass!!!! Good luck!!!

Specializes in Emergency.

I just passed my CEN yesterday. I've been an R.N. for a year and work at a Trauma 1 center for an unserved population. I used Sheehy's Manual of Emergency Nursing as my review guide and that was my only book. I also did the practice exams online from ENA. My hospital didn't cover the cost of my exam so it was expensive for me to keep getting a lot of books. I felt like I got exposure to a lot of things at my hospital which helped me with my exam.
