A few facts to bring us back into the realm of science...

--No matter what happened to your Great Aunt Sophie's sister-in-law's, cousin's friend....it is HIGHLY unlikely that anyone got the flu from a flu shot. They take apart the virus (that's why you'll see it called a "split-virus") and only leave the bit that provoke's your immune system to create a response; the fancy name for this bit being the antigenic determinant.

An excerpt from the package insert of sanofi pasteur's Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine

Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine, an inactivated influenza virus vaccine, for intramuscular use, is prepared from influenza viruses propagated in embryonated chicken eggs. The virus-containing allantoic fluid is
harvested and inactivated
formaldehyde. Influenza virus is concentrated and purified in a linear sucrose density gradient solution using a continuous flow centrifuge.
The virus is then chemically disrupted using a non-ionic surfactant, polyethylene glycol p-isooctylphenyl ether (Triton® X-100), producing a “split virus”.
The split virus is further purified and then suspended in sodium phosphate-buffered isotonic sodium chloride solution.

As a special note....please notice the lack of description of pieces of monkey fetuses, or lung tissue from people in Asia, or other bizarre things that have been mentioned in this thread. They grow the virus in chicken eggs, they then purify it, then inactivate by splitting it, then purify it again, then store it in buffered (prevents pH changes), isotonic (same amount of stuff in the fluid as your body has) solution...not mysterious or bizarre at all.

I share CuriousMe's concern about uniformed healthcare workers. Modern medications are not a concoction of witch's brew with "Eye of newt, and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and tongue of dog." With such a poor lack of scientific training and understanding in their own field, I am hesitant to label these uninformed individuals as healthcare professionals.

Thanks for the info, indigogirl. I saw the we had purchased Novartis' adjuvant (MF59 I believe) but wasn't sure why or if it was included in their H1N1 vaccine. :up:

Right, it was purchased for the national stockpile, and only for emergency use. This was a smart decision.

We are not in an emergency situation at this time. It looks like there will be enough vaccine for all that want it here, hence there was no pressing reason to use the adjuvants. The decision not to license the adjuvants in the US, however has not been well received by the WHO and certain other nations that are using them.

Adjuvants do lessen the amount of vaccine that would be needed therefore expanding the vaccine supply. That would have helped to free up much more vaccine to be donated to the poorer countries.

I'd be interested to see some research published in a reputable, peer reviewed journal that supports your suppositions ZenaBethune.

It's hard to take websites like "VacTruth" seriously. I wasn't even able to find out who "VacTruth" is....there was no explanation of how they're funded, by whom or what kind of credentials they have.

So, it's hard to believe them, just because they say so.....especially when a lot of what they say goes against what I know about microbiology and immunology.

I just thought I'd try to share why folks might not give the cited sources the same credence as they're obviously held by the author.

Who knows....maybe it could turn into a conversation :)

Wow! There are some crazy vaccine theories out there. Imagine if our children weren't vaccinated. The mortality rate of children would increase exponentially. The reason unvaccinated kids aren't getting these infections is because of herd immunity. I think the miniscule risks far outweighs coming down with a deadly case of H1N1.

Scrub monkey, I would have thought from your moniker and the content of the offensive overreaction you wrote when indigogirl gave you feedback, that you worked in the O.R. Peds, huh?

I took the quizes the link to which you referred had, and found there was another agenda they inserted in the "correct" answers. If I took them again, I'd select the answers I thought they wanted to make their points.

The problem is, Al.

That minds are like doors:

Some are open

Some are mostly closed with just a minor gap.

Some are closed.

And some are cemented shut, reinforced with steel girder and sealed so tight that it would take a C4 bomb to blast through.

And I don't own C4 nor have the wherewithal or the patience to work with it.

Beating your head against some doors, does no good and just gives one a really bad HA.

The less you engage with the sealed door the better - you aren't going to open it, no matter what. And just wastes your time, energy.

Focus on the doors that are openable with knowledge. It is a better use of your time, knowledge and energy.
