Vaccine Conspiracy Theorists More Likely To See Conspiracy Everywhere

"Where do climate change deniers, anti-GMO activists, and vaccine conspiracy theorists overlap one another? According to a recent study, described in Mother Jones, they seem to triangulate on a tendency to believe in conspiracies. And evidently, according to the study authors, no single theory has a stronger hold on the minds of such like-tending folk as the vaccines pharmaco-governmento-medico conspiracy theory does. According to Chris Mooney, author of The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Deny Science-and Reality, and writing at Mother Jones:

The finding may cast a great deal of light on the strange persistence of anti-vaccine views, which have centered on the claim that childhood vaccines are behind an alleged "epidemic" of autism. This assertion has been rejected by scientists. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Institute of Medicine have both weighed in strongly on the matter; and one chief proponent of the vaccine concerns, Andrew Wakefield, has even seen his original 1998 paper raising concerns about the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine retracted by the journal that published it, The Lancet.

Yet vaccine fears have persisted in the face of all scientific refutation (not to mention medical and public health experts saying that the failure to vaccinate is downright dangerous). And if these beliefs are often conspiratorial, that might help explain why. Almost by definition, conspiracy theories are irrefutable; rejections by scientific authorities just become part of the conspiracy."

Personally, I've always liked the mashed potato theory of murder causation. Did you know that nearly 100% of all convicted murderers in the US have consumed mashed potatoes? ::cue the eerie music::

Yes, and in deference to that logic and all it implies, I've turned myself in.

And my dog, too. He's shared many a Thanksgiving dinner.

Granted, I do not recall committing murder. And there is no supporting evidence. But surely it happened. Facts don't lie. And neither do statistics. 73% of all people know that.

Um, not sure about vaccines but Anti GMO isn't a conspiracy. The company who created them and is forcing them on to the public is by far one of the most if not THE MOST crooked company in history.

Monsanto has an awful track record. However, they didn't invent GMOs, which are as old as farming. Labelling GMOs means labeling every fruit, vegetable, and grain on the market, plus most of the meat and fish.

I kind of agree with you and I kinda don't. I don't believe that vaccines are causing autism but something out there is. Something is causing this. What has happened are all of the parents of autistic children are desperate for answers and someone comes along with the magic answer. It's the vaccines and they want the answer so bad they are willing to believe anything. Many of these parents blame themselves and feel like they did something to their baby in the womb. What food did I eat, did I lie in the wrong position, did I have the wrong doctor? They just want to know why. Then Jenny McCarthy comes out and says yes it's true. This is what happened to my son and now I have cured him with this magic diet. They want to believe. So I can understand. I don't think it's a conspiracy as much as it's desperate parents wanting a simple answer so they can put the blame somewhere. I really feel for them. And people like Wakefield and Jenny McCarthy make me very angry.

Autism is so scary because no one seems to know what causes it. Years of testing have proven that vaccines don't cause autism, but that still leaves an unknown number of other factors.

I don't understand how anyone could consider Jenny McCarthy a heath expert now that she sells e-cigarettes. Vaccines are dangerous, but inhaling vaporized antifreeze is safe?

She's very hypocritical, isn't she? I did do a lot of research last semester on GMOs. I wrote several research papers on the subject. You are correct that GMOs have been around since the beginning of time. What I don't agree with is how the government is forcing farmers to use them as their seeds. And I don't understand why if they are safe won't Monsanto just say hey, they are safe. I am certainly not a conspiracy theorist, but I just think there is too much shady stuff going on with GMOs. We label alcohol and cigarettes, why not these just so the consumer knows what they are buying? I know alcohol isn't the best for me and I still buy it every once in a while and it is labeled. I have never consumed a cigarette because I know it's harmful for me. I would just like the choice. And fortunately we live in a country where people can make those choices. I feel like the government is taking away my choice in this matter and I don't like that.

How could anyone have ever considered her a health expert at all?

It's pretty easy to find multiple examples of Monsanto saying GMO's are safe, what are you referring to?

Both the ant-vaccine and anti-GMO movement are far more visceral than logical and are basically reflexive opposition to the same things: Distrust of big business, distrust of technology, and a perceived need to defend autonomy. All of these are good, healthy reactions so long as they are tempered with some rational logic, otherwise they become reckless and potentially dangerous.

I'm an Angela Lansbury fan.

How have GMOs been around since the 'beginning of time'? Even thousands of years before the word 'science' was even introduced?

And another poster stated GMOs have been around since the 'beginning of farming'? WOW.

Monsanto has given the 'drink' to people to make them believe that they, themselves, started agriculture in just the last century. Drink it up, folks.

Not that any of that has anything really to do with this thread, but yes people have been manupulating crops since farming began. People have picked the "best" specimens as seed for the next season and this has continued for thousands of years. Introducing new specimens, splicing, all have been around for hundreds of years. I think if there is a doubt that we have been genetically modifying are crops and livestock for thousands of years someone just needs to look at the ancient ancestors to modern day cattle and sheep for starters.

Now, if someone has some peer-reviewed scientific evidence that commercially available genetically modified foods are harmful I would like to see it otherwise it is just more conspiracy theories...
