Could This Be Diabetes?

I've been having some strange symptoms over the past few weeks that I'm beginning to wonder might mean I'm finally going over the edge.......I've been "borderline" since my early 20s, have had periods throughout my adult life when I've experienced frequent episodes of hypoglycemia, and three of my kids were well over 9 pounds. Now, I've noticed that I'm hungry almost all the time and have gained back about 20# of the weight I lost earlier this year; sometimes I also feel 'funny' after eating, kind of shaky and hungry and headachy. I pee all the time whether I take my Lasix or not---of course, that may be due to the fact that I always feel dry and therefore am drinking several liters of fluids per day.

Here's the rub: whenever I do an FSBS at work, it's always low-normal, running in the 80s to low 90s no matter when I check it. I did get a reading of 145 the other morning after eating a breakfast of 2 pieces of dry toast and 3 slices of bacon, which is definitely unusual for me, given the fact that I never had numbers like that even when I was eating a huge amount of carbohydrates. But I feel strange, and that's what worries me.......like right now: I just ate two bowls of cereal and feel shaky & irritable, and I'm still hungry!! What's up with THAT?? I did so well for so long, and even though I've never gone back to eating candy or other concentrated sweets like I used to, I'm eating huge amounts of bread and potatoes and cereals, and I feel like crap.

So.......could this be diabetes after all? I almost wish I had a glucometer so I could check my blood sugars when I feel like this. I did have some blood drawn the other day and have a doctor's appointment next Thursday, so I'm not going to just ignore this like I've done with some things in the past.......but my fasting blood sugars are ALWAYS normal, and I've no reason to think it won't be this time. You'd think a nurse who deals with diabetics every day would know all this stuff, but I don't get how I can have all these symptoms and still have normal blood sugars.

Any thoughts??

So why not have the doctor do a HgbA1C and find out? If you are diabetic that should give you a good indicator of your status. The doctor would have to direct you to any follow up with diatician or medication.

Could not have said it better myself...You can fool a glucometer...You CANNOT fool an A1c:rolleyes: Get it checked out!!!!!!!!!..As a diabetic, I can tell you the sooner under control...The better you'll feel:p

Good idea.....I think I will ask for a HgbA1C to be done. It makes sense in light of my symptoms, and it'll definitely tell how well 'controlled' my blood sugars really are. Thanks for the suggestion. :kiss

I agree with meowrsmile when she said HgbA1C test! Lets look at the last 3 months! Then...wow, let a doctor field this one!

I have noticed that many MANY of my patients will get all sensitive and eat very little if anything at breakfast in fear that breakfast foods are somewhat higher in sugar than most other meals! Ummmmm NOT! IN fact..what happens if you exercise when you don't eat well??? Yep, you release glucose stores from muscle tissue as a result of normal cellular function! So it goes to reason in our profession of stress, physical labor and emotional strain at times that when you wake up, tired, and thrown into our job..you may just release some glucose from muscle tissues! So your CBG readings are not too uncommon!

The best way is to have the HgbA1C done, have a doc you TRUST look at them, and the old trial and error time we warn our own patients about! They may say...eat a good breakfast, like we say...or may try a trial run oral meds....and see if this helps. Don't forget we are like any other we treat..we get to go through the hoops just like them :)...hopefully we are smart enough not to let a doc give us a scrip without some questions..LOL! Sorry, but this is a unfortunate circumstance from general American eating habits in general..which most of us have learned from infancy!

Good luck..my hubby is going throught the EXACT same thing, with history..but he is paramedic..and not best field to be in when your shift is on when everyone..including places to get decent foods...are asleep! He is still borderline...and I am so sad that soon, if not corrected..will turn full blown! He had a heart attack at 31..I don't want diabetes to come into play too...all because of dietary habits..which can be changed with real functional knowledge and a bit of wanted control....

I am a CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator). A HgbA1C cannot be used to diagnose diabetes. In Type 2 diabetes, often the 2 hour postprandial blood glucose is elevated (rather than the fasting blood glucose). Having a baby over 9 lbs is a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. Plus, hypoglycemia is a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. The typical symptoms of hyperglycemia are polyuria, polyphasia, and polydipsia. Good luck to you.

well I'm just a lowly student and correct me if I'm wrong but aren't all those carbs just as bad as candy, sweets, etc.?[/quote']

there is no such thing as a "lowly student"....we are ALL students if we choose to remain current in nursing and medicine. Your contributions are as valuable as anyone's here.
