Could This Be Diabetes? - page 2

I've been having some strange symptoms over the past few weeks that I'm beginning to wonder might mean I'm finally going over the edge.......I've been "borderline" since my early 20s, have had... Read More

Good idea.....I think I will ask for a HgbA1C to be done. It makes sense in light of my symptoms, and it'll definitely tell how well 'controlled' my blood sugars really are. Thanks for the suggestion. :kiss

I agree with meowrsmile when she said HgbA1C test! Lets look at the last 3 months! Then...wow, let a doctor field this one!

I have noticed that many MANY of my patients will get all sensitive and eat very little if anything at breakfast in fear that breakfast foods are somewhat higher in sugar than most other meals! Ummmmm NOT! IN fact..what happens if you exercise when you don't eat well??? Yep, you release glucose stores from muscle tissue as a result of normal cellular function! So it goes to reason in our profession of stress, physical labor and emotional strain at times that when you wake up, tired, and thrown into our job..you may just release some glucose from muscle tissues! So your CBG readings are not too uncommon!

The best way is to have the HgbA1C done, have a doc you TRUST look at them, and the old trial and error time we warn our own patients about! They may say...eat a good breakfast, like we say...or may try a trial run oral meds....and see if this helps. Don't forget we are like any other we treat..we get to go through the hoops just like them ...hopefully we are smart enough not to let a doc give us a scrip without some questions..LOL! Sorry, but this is a unfortunate circumstance from general American eating habits in general..which most of us have learned from infancy!

Good luck..my hubby is going throught the EXACT same thing, with history..but he is paramedic..and not best field to be in when your shift is on when everyone..including places to get decent foods...are asleep! He is still borderline...and I am so sad that soon, if not corrected..will turn full blown! He had a heart attack at 31..I don't want diabetes to come into play too...all because of dietary habits..which can be changed with real functional knowledge and a bit of wanted control....

I am a CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator). A HgbA1C cannot be used to diagnose diabetes. In Type 2 diabetes, often the 2 hour postprandial blood glucose is elevated (rather than the fasting blood glucose). Having a baby over 9 lbs is a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. Plus, hypoglycemia is a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. The typical symptoms of hyperglycemia are polyuria, polyphasia, and polydipsia. Good luck to you.

well I'm just a lowly student and correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all those carbs just as bad as candy, sweets, etc.?
there is no such thing as a "lowly student"....we are ALL students if we choose to remain current in nursing and medicine. Your contributions are as valuable as anyone's here.

you are far from lowely..and please..give yourself credit! you care..and yes, you will find bumps in the way from time to time...we all find a way and gather insight from it..no one is born perfect...so we get to learn!

give yourself time...give yourself time to reward for your hard work! it saved me really...and it saves me now!

be honest to you..because when all is said an done...who do you really have to answer to? yep..our own worse critic..ourselves!!!!!!
