O.k. I applied for that job back in October. Today is Feb 2 and they finally called me :)

I was a bit disapointed with the hours 3-11... I'm used to 12 hour shifts. But I scheduled an interview anyway.... then today I picked up the paper and they have a ten hour weekend shift available.

I'll let you know how it goes.... I'm so excited to bet getting out of the hospital :)

We have 1500 inmates with approx. 14-15 nurses on the night shift.

4 nurses for 1000 inmates sounds like a bad ratio to me...but I guess it must be the facility that I work in.

I think that to properly analyze the situation one must determine what percentage of the inmate population requires medical attention. Presumably, during the night shift the majority of inmates are asleep. The correctional population does not contain very many elderly geriatric types that in a normal civilian population would require somewhat more medical attention. Accordingly, I would think that 14-15 nurses for an inmate population of 1500,on the surface, sounds like a piece of cake. I realize that you may have early morning med pass and glucometer checks but, with 14-15 nurses, it seems like great staffing. Let us assume, for the sake of argument, that a small rural community has a population of 1500 people including infants and children who receive medical care from a local urgent care center. How many nurses do you think would be required during nights?

Four nurses including one in intake for 1800 inmates. Some nites only three.

Only one or 2 more on other shifts but the administrators are here. :uhoh3:

Regarding the staffing issue....the 14-15 nurses on night shift.....where do you work? I think I'd like a job there! We have 1 nurse on dayshift...medical administrator is there and she is also a nurse. 2 nurses on evening (3-11) and 1 nurse on nights (11-7). On the weekends (Fri and Sat) nights we have 2 nurses...that was just started because our census has been up and weekends have been so busy. We have 250-300 inmates at any given time...usually closer to 300. Med pass at 0900 and 2100. Accuchecks at 0600 and 1630. I relalize the facility I work in is less people but the 14 or 15 nurses still sounds good! It only takes an emergency with one inmate to make you wish you had a lot more help! And is it just my facility or does it seem to you that all the work is usally piled on evening shift (3-11)? :rotfl:

do u get paid the same amout working for a jail/prison or is the pay low. It should be more if u have 2,300 patients to 3 nurses. (seems like a lot of work) Plus, I think I would be scared of the inmates.

Hi Foxy!

I make about the same as I did when I was working at Hospitals here in Louisville. Right now I am at 21.5 as an RN before shift dif.

The LPN's make ALMOST as much... about the most they can make outside of agency around here at around $17-18 an hour.

They are not all in beds remember. MOST nites 4 is okay.. factoring in one Mental Health Nurse who can cross over if things get bad as we also would pitch in if she had a suicide attempt or some other of kilter thing. MOST nites its enough. Sometimes its frustrating. The work release facility I work at is running around 500 inmates and we now only have ONE nurse at any given time and there is actually enough work for 2 most shifts.

Scared of the inmates???

No. They know if you are new tho... we must smell different. LOL. Sometimes I am more cautious but I don't think I have ever been afraid.

We sure could use 2 nurses on the booking floor though. Sheesh THATS a lot of bloody work.
