does a ballot cast in private or a card signed in public better reveal a worker's true preference about whether to join a union? a private vote is the obvious answer, but organized labor has nonetheless made the misleadingly named employee free choice act (efca, h.r. 800) its highest legislative priority.

recently, unions have switched the focus of their organizing operations from private balloting to publicly signed cards. these so-called card-check campaigns make it much easier for unions to organize workers, but most companies strongly resist the idea of denying their employees a vote. unions now want the government to take away workers' right to vote and certify unions after only a card-check campaign. the employee free choice act would do this and more.

It is not propaganda. How would you feel if a local politician came up to you and asked you to sign a card and that was your vote for him?????????? I don't think you'd be very happy about that. Private voting is right Americans cherish and actually are fighting for others to have in several other countries. Are you against our soldiers for fighting for your right to vote in secret on such an important issue?

I'm much more in favor of a secret ballot than someone shoving a card in front of me in a whole room of people. Do you leave the curtain open when you vote for president, etc. Do you show your ballot to people as you leave the booth?

IF the votes are there they are there, if not they aren't. I wouldn't work under a union, I vote against it but it would be my secret vote and no one at the time would know how I voted. If the union was voted in I would leave.

Are you in favor of secret ballot union elections?

All union elections should be secret ballot. The voter has full control how s/he votes once inside the booth and can no longer be influenced, intimidated, coerced by either side. Then, nobody can complain once the results are made known. Any other way, and you have undue influence. It doesn't matter who has the bigger club, it is not a fair way to deal.

No. I'm not in favor of unions or union elections. I'm also not in favor of making it any easier for unions to unionize a facility either.
