Is it possible to create a 12-hour work shift for CNA?

Is that possible to implement a 12-hr work shift for CNA in long term care (nursing home/ skilled center/rehab). If you facility has one please share. May be 12-hr with a few overlap 8-hr during busy time of the day??? Thank you!

Most nursing homes in my area have 12-hr shifts got CNA's, as well as the hospitals for PCT's. I'm not sure how to make that happen but I do know it's common (at least in my area).

I work for a facility where all ancillary staff is 12 hours, This type of shift may not be cost effective for your nursing home but if you bring it up in a staff meeting and then collect enough signatures from fellow CNA's it might happen. The only issue I foresee is the 3-11 shift, How many of them are willing to swing days and how many willing to swing nights. Also now that you are 12 hours when will full-time begin at 36 or the usual 40? This is an administration issue, just bring it up and mention how interested you are. best of luck!

I think the nice thing about having a variety of 8 & 12 hour shifts is that you can accommodate more of the CNA's and allow for more flexibility in scheduling. I like this idea of collecting signatures, as it would show that there is a definite interest in this sort of change before taking it to the administration. Good luck!

The main floors in our facility work 8s and our Alzheimer's unit aides work 12s. It seems to work well for us.

In 24 hours we usually have 4 CCA 0645-1315, 4 CCA 0645-1917, 2 CCA 1500-2330, 2 CCA 1845-0717. We actually have more trouble filling the 8 hour positions, the number of new staff who get these positions shows that the older staff do not want them.

I work 2 12's on the weekend from 7a-7p in what is called a Baylor position which means I work 24 and get paid for 32. On Fridays though I pick up and extra shift from 11a-7p just for the full-time status. I love my 12's because of the Baylor pay!!

Our facility does both 8 and 12 hour shifts. Some people only want to work 8 hours where others prefer the 12s. Since I am just working over the summer for coverage I have been privilege to both. I think it does allow for more flexibility on scheduling both the aides and the nurses.

My facility only does 8 hour shifts, but my Grandmother is at another facility in a different town which does twelve hour shifts for nocs (6p-6a) and 8 hour shifts for days and pms (6a-2p & 2p-10p)
