interested in becoming a CNA/STNA (OH)

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

Right now I have my HS diploma and I'm nearing the end of my freshman year in college. I live in Ohio and I'm persuing my BSN (and later an MSN) but in the meantime I would really like to get a job as a CNA/STNA because I really think that it would help prepare me for nursing school, and I think I'm just overly excited about "getting out there" in the nursing field so being a CNA/STNA sounds like a good option. I was also thinking about an LPN but most colleges that offer LPN programs have waiting lists and I don't want to deal with that! Anyway, I have some questions concerning becoming a CNA/STNA...

1. Does anybody know of any CNA/STNA training programs in the Cleveland *OR* Akron area?

2. How much do these programs generally cost (or are they free?)

3. What's the pay like?

4. What kind of hours do you work? I don't want to work TOO much because even though I'm a "prenursing" student (that's already admitted to the college of nursing at my university lol) I'm still hoping to actually get a seat in the CON so I can start my clincals - and school comes first. I'm looking to only work maybe a few nights / week.

5. What exactly is the difference between a CNA and an STNA? I know CNA stands for certified nurses' assistant and STNA stands for state trained nursing aid and apparently STNA is really only used in ohio, but is there a difference?

a lot of views but no replies....c'mon, anyone?????? :(

Hi Shrimpchips!!I am An LPN used to be a N/A.We didnt need to be certified back in the day.Anyway,I think that is a great idea for you to be a Cna or Stna prior to nursing school ,you will learn alot of things.I believe the REd Cross on Euclid Avenue offers Cna's(Stna)classes.I think you have to pay a fee,but im not sure. Its worth finding out about.Give the Red Cross a call.I also heard some nursing homes offer stna training.Youll gain a lot of skills being a STNA OR CNA.Good Luck to you in the nursing field!!

#8. Where can I attend nurse aide training classes?

You may call the Nurse Aide Training Competency Evaluation Program ("NATCEP") at (614) 752-8285 for information about the location of nurse aide training classes.

#17. If a nurse aide pays for training and testing and is then hired by a long-term care facility, can the nurse aide be reimbursed for the cost

of training and testing?

Yes. Up to twelve months after completing training, a nurse aide can request reimbursement for the cost of training and testing. Federal regulations (42 C.F.R. 483.158) allow a facility to request reimbursement for these costs.

Working hours ... that are two CNAs at my facility that work two days a week - one works every Tuesday and every other weekend, the other works every Thursday and every other weekend.

I think, but I am guessing here, that CNA and STNA get the same training. Think I read in New Hampshire they are called LNA.

PBAJS, THANK YOU!!! :)

I'll be taking the STNA "course" through Lorain County Community College in two weeks. The class is three weeks - full time and is considered a 5 credit hour course. The school charges the same as it would for any credit class. There are long term care facilities around that do offer free classes and testing, but I wanted to start in mid-March and couldn't find anything around that time. Good luck with your search.

is there a waiting list? and this might be a stupid question but do you have to pay tuition and stuff for those 3 weeks?

There's no waiting list for the STNA class at LCCC. I was told the classes do fill up, but they are offered frequently through out the school year. I'm not sure about the summer schedule. The class is considered a 5 credit hour class, so the cost is equivalent to taking a 5 hour class during the semester - 400+ for a county resident.

Look around, a lot of nursing homes offer classes or go to a career center. thats where I went in high school

2. How much do these programs generally cost (or are they free?)

Mine was a couple hundred. It was in my school fees so I'm not sure of the exact amount.

3. What's the pay like?

I started out @ $10.25 three years ago and is now making $11.30, but my nursing pays better than some. My friend started out and just over $9

4. What kind of hours do you work?

I work a few nights a week on 2nd which is 2-10 @ my job

Just a different certification, and yes, I believe Ohio and maybe some other states have State Tested Nursing Assistants while others have Certified Nursing Assistants
