Did I bomb this interview/job?

Hello everyone,

I'm a new CNA. I had a job interview 4/7. It went extremely well, the interviewer was really impressed (her words). Near the end of the interview the recruiter informs me that new staff orientation would be conducted on 4/14. She asked me if I'd have anything going on that would prevent me from being able to attend (I assured her no, my schedule would be clear). She then told me that she'd be sending an email to HR (I assumed that meant I indirectly was being seriously considered) she stated I'd be hearing soon about the details (she gave me an estimate about 2 days since orientation was nearing soon)

The two days rolled by and no phone call. By day 3 I called the interviewer back (she'd gave me her direct number as well as email address). She informed me she didn't know why HR hadn't called, to look out to hear something by the end of the week. Well, that Friday 4/11 rolled by and still nothing. Considering she stated orientation was the coming Monday I was pretty much thinking may be I wasn't chosen after all and she was trying to let me down nicely with the wait for the phone call run around.

I ended up calling HR myself that Friday afternoon (only to be rerouted back to my original interviewer). She told me that she just didn't know why phone calls hadn't been made. She was happy about my enthusiasm but at that point she couldn't tell me anything as it was now in HR's court.

does anything thing my eagerness killed this opportunity? It's now 4/15 and still no call back, email, nothing. Should I just consider this a loss and move or could there be hope?

Any advice?

I think there is still hope! If they didn't intend to hire you, they wouldn't "beat around the bush" about it. I'm sure they've turned down many ppl before, and aren't shy about telling you "no thank you". You would have gotten a "reject" letter by now if you didn't get the job.

I honestly don't think you were too pushy or too eager. In fact, I think you should call the interview back again and ask her if the position is still available and that you are still interested. Tell her that you were told that you would receive details about the orientation and that you never received it. (Did they have your correct phone number!!?!!!). If the position is no longer available, tell her that you are interested in future positions. ....then apply again in a few weeks.

You HAVE to be assertive when job searching these days. It is the squeaky wheel that gets the oil. There is a difference between being a pain in the butt and being assertive tho. I wouldn't call daily, but be certain they know you are interested and capable of doing the job. Always follow the chain of command. Don't go over her head when inquiring, but speak to her directly.

And, since you now have her name, be sure to address any future resumes to her directly!

I also wouldn't wait for this place to come around and offer you a position. Keep up with the job search and if something else comes up before this other place gets their act together, accept it. ...you snooze, you loose!

by the way, it is not unusual for companies to change "scheduled" orientation dates. They may have planned to have several people there at once, and it's possible the "leader" of the orienation got sick. It's possible they have a minimum number of ppl who must be signed up before the orientation is held, and there just wasn't enough people being hired....so the date may have been changed.....

Like I said, there is still hope, but at the same time, don't sit around and wait for a call when there are other opportunities waiting for you!

Thank you for the reply and advice. This was my first interview post graduation and certification. I'm still learning the ropes of the do's & don'ts. I just didn't want to come off as being a pest. I'm still actively looking elsewhere in the midst of the wait.

It it is a fairly large organization. Perhaps they have switched dates. I do remember the interviewer stating that the 4/14 orientation was the first session and there would be another possibly held on 4/28.

Im going to give it another day and reach out again.

thanks again for the advice :)

Do not be meek when job searching! You are not a pest. I would call again and get HR's info for yourself. It's possible the interviewer forgot to email, or it went poof, or someone in HR isn't doing their job. Heck if you can figure out when/where exactly the orientation is, I would just show up.

I see now that the orientation was supposedly yesterday. Hope you got in and everything went well! If you got in a trap of unanswered phone calls I would keep trying. If they ARE trying to let you down easy, they are being chicken about it and deserve to be pestered. LOL. Good luck!

Thank you both :)

im happy to report, I JUST got a call from the HR rep about 20 minutes ago with them offering me the position! Turns out that the leadership heading up orientation had been out with an unexpected situation. They pushed everything back until they got another manager available for the orientation. Long story short I start my orientation 4/28!

Thanks again :)

They might be doing a background check first in HR. I also waited awhile to get my job after interview at local hospital . I also called the interviewer and was told after background check I would get a call for a job offer. Took awhile but yup they finally called and made a offer which I joyfully accepted so good luck and hope you get that call soon.
