My son just had an appendectomy,he is 15.The surgeon told me it took 4 of them to hold him down,as they were removing his tube. They said he was determined to lie on his side.Is it common for people to be awake at that time. Also, what causes such strength at that time, when your supposed to be sedated?

Patients are not extubated in the O.R. until they respond to verbal commands. It is VERY common for adolescent boys to wake up "wild". I don't know why that is--you can count on it though! Sounds pretty typical! Hope he has a speedy recovery, proud2b1 !

Ebear,Thanks for that.I was concerned, and when I showed that to the surgeon,he made light of it.I just kinda thought"what goes on in surgery, stays in surgery!"I was real concerned if he had cussed or what he may have said or did.Guess this is one time lol, that mommy wont know!He is doing great! He has never been through anything so naturally he was scared.I did get to baby him,at least when he was on pain pills. When they wore off, well,he was back to normal, thats when I asked for more for him,HAHA!!! thanks again

:lol2: Keep those pain pills comin'! Sometimes they do use a local (usually Marcaine) that will last about 6 hrs or so. It helps a lot! Was the surgery today? Glad he's doing well! :wink2:

i would imagine that he doesn't remember the et being removed? it's not uncommon for people, especially young people to respond when the tube is pulled, but they don't remember it. the surgeon knows this and is probably why he responded the way he did. people say and do the strangest things before totally waking up from anesthesia. :chuckle

Are you guys are talking about the tube they put down through the nose? I had my appendix removed and when it came time for my tube to be removed, they simply put a paper towel over my nose and pulled.

you obviously had a ng tube. not at all the same as an et tube. not even remotely similar.

I honestly would not care what came out of my 15 yr old boys mouth whilst he was post surgery extubation! Why would that be a problem for you?

I worry more what comes out of my 15 yr old sons mouth whos non medicated/ sedated! The everyday cussing makes me want to scrub his mouth out with soap! (it's a test, and boy, dont we know it!)

They are talking about the ET-tube (ie the "beathing tube"). When people are put under general anaesthetic, they have a breathing tube put in and a ventillator breathes for the patient while they are asleep. It is generally removed in the OR as the anesthesia wears off and the patient wakes up. Half-awake and under the effects of the anaesthetic, with an uncofortable tube in your thraot - many people do have a "fighting" type response as all this goes on.

I always wake up fighting! :D Funny thing is I am fighting people I work with!!!!! It is not unusual for patients to wake up this way. Glad he is doing well and wishes for a speedy recovery!

I've heard those stories before. The husband of one of our directors woke up fighting and it took many people to get him calmed down. It is an interesting phenomenon considering they should still be sedated somewhat.

One of my coworkers says she always comes out with gut wrenching sobs, bawling her guts out for no good reason.

This might be a question for the CRNA forum.

You were worried that he may have cussed while coming out of surgery? I'm not a parent, but if I were, I wouldn't care less what my son said while coming out of anesthesia. I would be more interested in how his surgery went and his future recovery than if he said a naughty word.
