Is distance learning as effective?

I am looking into applying to different distance learning programs and was wondering if people feel they are prepared to practice upon graduation- or rather, if they are as prepared as they would be after attending a traditional program. I am looking into these schools that are distance learning:

Frontier (which I hear is great)

East Carolina Univ.

Philadelphia Univ.

Univ. of Cincinnati

Anyone have info about them? Thanks!:heartbeat

Hey Kitchenluvr,

I went thru the same questions you had. But, I concluded that successfully completing a distance education will only demonstrate positive profesional skills of being a self-starter, independent, ability to locate resources, and much more. Plus I inquired about my chosen school in the midwifery world and every midwife I encountered recognized it with positive notes. Two key words: very reputable.

I could only tell u from my experience with Frontier. I just recently got accepted, orientation isnt for another month but already I feel the support from this program. They really got their stuff together. I have access to certain classes and able to look at their syllabus. Plus their clinical requirements are double the minimum of what ACNM recommends which translates to a more experience provider. I would definitely recommend Frontier. I did research on other distance schools and couldnt find much as far as reviews. Plus I chose distance for the flexibility and the cost. B/c the program near me cost $15000 a semester equated to unneccessary debt.:) Hope this was somewhat helpful.

I can only speak from my experience thus far with Frontier. They have been 100% supportive of me in every aspect. If I send an email - I get a response ASAP. They've answered probably 4 million questions for me and never at all seemed annoyed.

One of the instructors even met me for lunch one day to talk to me more about the program.

I too worry about the online aspect of the program but at the same time, I've only heard good wonderful things about the program and their graduates - both CNM and FNP.

When I'm finally ready to start school - it is the only school I will consider because it rolls everything I'm so passionate about into one really awesome and great program.

Good luck with your decision!!!!

some quick ?'s for you.

I will be completeing an ADN in december 2009, and after being rejected by UIC this month, Fronteir is now my top choice. Do you know Fronteirs admissions rate? I'm getting really antsy about whether or not I will ever be a CNM and am fed up with the dozens of traditional universities I have looked at that can only accept a tiny percentage of applicants out of 100's every year :(

I don't know their admission rate, but I'm pretty sure Frontier accepts students four times a year. That increases your chances because if you don't get accepted the first time, you can apply again every three months. Most schools only accept once or twice a year.

I'm just a lowly ASN student, so someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!

I can't speak for others, but I have been at Frontier for 1.5 years now, and distance learning is effective. I have learned and growed from the experience. It is tough though, and I think it has to be because it is distance learning.

I am a Frontier student and was told by a faculty member last fall that they generally take about 50% of the applicants. Don't know if that is still accurate, but hope it helps!

Frontier requires a year of L/D related experience. Also, if you don't have a BSN you will need to apply to the RN-MSN bridge program. If you have a non-nursing bachelors degree and the RN you can apply with a portfolio to the MSN. I am also an ADN student. I have a previous degree and hope to go thru Frontier in the future. Good Luck!

frontier actually has 6 admssions a year. They are sticklers about GPA which has to be 3.0 or above so it is important to keep your grades up there.

Do distance learning schools tend to be cheaper? I wasn't really thinking about attending one but if tuition is more reasonable, I will def. consider.
