  1. I suggest you go to the AABC (American Assoc of Birthing Centers) web site. They offer workshops regarding How to Start a Birthing Center several times per year. Some schools send their student to these workshops as part of their midwifery curriculum. Good luck. You have great aspirations! :)
  2. Gosh, you really are feeling the pain that aspiring midwives feel when working in the many frustrating birth settings available to women in the United States today. THat is why you need to go to School and become midwives. THe women need you, they need more options and we need more of you in the profession of midwifery. You are aspiring midwives who are being asked to practice obstetrics. THe lessons you learn in the settings will be valuable to your future. Hang in there as you move forward towards your goal. 3. I think that if you are applying for the CNM program at FSMFN, your application would be stronger if you have some L + D experience or at least some nursing experience working with women during the pregnancy/birthing period.
  4. Frontier requires only one year of nursing experience and will take other experiences into consideration. You really don't need years of nursing experience to apply. If you want to be a CNM go for it. I am a Frontier grad and never regreted for one minute taking that first step and eventually becoming a CNM. I love my job. Best of luck as you make your decision.
  5. Frontier says you should budget at least 40 hours per week if you are going to do the program full-time and 30 hours per week if you are going to do it part-time. It really does take at least that much time. Lot's of Frontier students work full-time, not to say it's easy but it can be done. Depends what else you have going on in your life too I think. It is very difficult to work and go to school once you get into the clinical portion of the program (the last 6-9 months). Good luck!
  6. Yes Jamie, at Frontier anyone has the right to refuse to have a pelvic done on them. There are students with issues and everyone is told at the beginning that if they object and do not want to participate, they should tell the instructor.
  7. btw Frontier will allow students to directly enter the MSN/FNP program if you have an associate degree in nursing and a bachelor's in another field.. You have to complete a portfolio demonstrating nursing knowledge.
  8. frontier actually has 6 admssions a year. They are sticklers about GPA which has to be 3.0 or above so it is important to keep your grades up there.
  9. yes I am biased towards Frontier as a graduate, I admit it. I received a great education there. and they have been doing distance for 18 years so they really know how to do it. but ofcourse there are other very good schools out there and each person will fi d they have a preference.
  10. I think it's true for most program although I think a few hire women to a t as models.
  11. THis does happen at Frontier but not at Frontier Bound. Frontier Bound is the orientation session that lasts 4 days. Then you do course work for 12-18 months (depending if you are full-time or part-time) and then you come to campus for an 8 day skills session with a smaller group before you start clinical. Here students do physical exams including pelvic exams on each other, not really as bad as you think and anyone who really opposes this does not have to have one done on themselves (although they do have to do one before starting clinical). The philosophy is that you can leanr alot both ways (having one done and doing one).
  12. It depends on the School that you go to. Most CNM schools require that you have a Bachelor's degree in Nursing to enter and you gradute with a Masters Degree. Frontier School has an ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing) to MSN option though. Yale has a program where you enter as a non-nurse and graduate as a nurse-midwife.
  13. Frontier has been in the business of distance education midwives for a long time. What is more attractive about U of Cin. Just curious?
  14. Good luckto you. I think you'll like this program.
  15. I really cannot see any benefit in "breaking the bed". ??? What do you see as th benefit?
