Turned down for job because it is a magnet hospital?

by LIjeany

i recently had high hopes and a good reccomendation for a job at a cardiac hospital, i went
through the interview process, but at the next step, the nurse recruiter said it was a "magnet hospital" and they had reached their quota of r.n.'s with a.s. degrees and could only hire r.n.'s with b.s. degrees to maintain their magnet status, i know a little bit about
the highly regarded magnet status, but was this a plausible reason to turn me down for a job? thanks for any replies

I haven't seen it written down anywhere, personally, but I've heard from multiple sources that part of the Magnet certification requirements is that there be a certain percentage of BSN-prepared RNs -- so, assuming that's true, it would be a legitimate reason for not hiring a non-BSN nurse.

My facility gave up their quest for Magnet status a few years ago b/c they didn't have anywhere near the correct ratios of BSN to other degrees...they even let those LPN people work there

(Don't flame me anyone...I'm kidding...I'm a LPN.)

Seriously though, there's been a BIG push for our nurses to go back to school and keep advancing their degrees, and although there's nothing in writing, it seems like the vast majority of new hires have been BSNs. I've heard through the grapevine a few times that they are planning on going for Magnet again in a few years, so it seems like more than coincidence.
