Job opportunity for New Graduates?

I'm graduating this May with an associate in Nursing from US. The job market for new graduates in US is very bad. I want to start working in ICU, ER, or Med-surg unit, but almost impossible at this time, too much competition. I have a friend who is graduating at the same time from a Canadian BSN school, she already has a couple of ICU, ER job offers.

So I'm wondering how is the job market in canada now? Is there a chance for people like me to get a RN job in Canada? As to immigrations, I'm a green card holder in the States, not a US or Canadian citizen. Will this create a problem?

A baccalaureate degree is the standard for entry to practice for registered nurses in Canada, you can check with the provinicial nursing regulatory body, of the province you are interested in working in, to see if you would qualify with an associates but most will require the BScN.
The job market in your immediate area might not hold many opportuinities at this time, but keep trying to find work in the US, somethings bond to come up. There are US nursing job fairs scheduled at various locations, have you attended a job fair? Also have you submitted your resume to every hospital in your home state and surrounding states? Good luck, hope you find a job soon.

There have been layoffs in Ontario in recent weeks. Many vacancies in other provinces are not being filled. It's kind of the luck of the draw right now, I think. All you can really do is approach the college of nursing (BON) in the province where you want to live, see if you're eligible to write the exam and then start looking for employers who might have vacancies. If you aren't eligible to write the exam, then it won't matter if ten hospitals want you.

janfrn is right, Ontario is into some tough times right now. Someone posted here recently that they had secured a job in BC but that most of his/her Ontario classmates have only been offered the standard 7 month new grad initiative. I really hope that they all are offered work after the new grad initiative time period. Hopefully those who have just graduated will post sometime.

Finding a nursing job in Ontario is pretty difficult right now as far as I've seen/heard/know from my own research. There's been a hiring freeze in Toronto, I'm not sure for how long that'll be in place. New grads as well as nurses relocating are having a hard time finding a hospital-based nursing job even with the new grad initiative in place.

I don't really understand why hospitals in Ontario are not using the new grad initiative and at least giving new grads 7 months of work experience. Does anyone know why this is?

Yes. It's real.

The Ontario economy is in a deep slump right now and everything is being cut back, even nurses. Some facilities have laid nurses off. And Toronto is one of the most desirable cities to relocate to for immigrants, so the supply will outstrip the demand for at least the foreseeable future.

Well, actually Ontario does have a New Grad Initiative, and part of that initiative is 7 months of temporary full-time employment. What I meant was that from what I'm hearing from some of my classmates' experience (those who weren't lucky enough to have gotten a job in their pre-grad placement or didn't start applying back in Feb), they are having a hard time landing a job interview - including myself

I do hope you land something soon. I find it very sad that new grads are having a tough time. What I don't understand is why, when the province is willing to pay for 7 months of full time, the hospitals are not hiring all the new grads as it seems floors are often short with people calling off and summer vacation time requests. JMO.
