My suggestion to you is log onto kidscamp.com

That's how I got started. Take a look at the various camps that are out there.

Log onto their sites to get a feel for the camp. This will also give you a great insite to other camps and how they are run.

Then you will know what kind of camp you would like to work for etc.

Good advice from the others, campnurse.org is the official camp nurse organization. I have been a camp nurse for the past two summers, and I love it, and will be camp nursing again this summer. Its great experience.

How do you go about getting a job?? Do you send your resume straight to the camp?? Also, are there opportunities for LPN"s?? What are these camps normally looking for in terms of experience??

campnurse.org is not advertising, it is the professional organization for camp nurses. Very good place to start, as I said before, I am a LPN and a camp nurse, there are many jobs for LPN's depends on the state.

I looked up ACA accredited camps in the state I wanted. Then I narrowed them down by various criteria, like same-sex or mixed, location, etc. Then I emailed about 10 the exact same thing - I am an experienced RN looking for a camp job, do you have any and can you tell me about it? Lots of replies and so far 4-5 seriously interested. I've chosen the one they want but they haven't chosen me yet, but I have no doubt they will. And even if they didn't, choice #2 looks pretty good too.

I think they have a terrible time finding nurses for an 8-week, low-paying commitment.

If the state you are interested in for camp nursing, doesn't recognize your license as part of the NLCA - can you still do summer camp nursing? ie - My TX license is recognized in many states but not in others? Do I need to get that state's particular license in order to work, if they are not part of the nurse compact group? Does that take a long time?

Not sure I'm phrasing this question right - but maybe someone understands what I'm trying to ask.

I do not live in a compact state, and I had to get a license in the state the camp is in. The camp paid for it. As for taking a long time - depends on the state. I got my Maine (camp) license in about a month. However, I just applied for a CA license and they want fingerprints, transcripts, on and on, and I expect it to take at least 3-4 months.

I think if you practice in a state when you're not licensed in that state, you could face legal troubles for practicing nursing without a license--isn't that right? Every camp I've heard of requires that you get licensed for their state, but they are very willing to help with that process.
