Excelsior College & California
Hi all, as I am reading around this thread I cant help but to wonder if I was reading the right information on the CA BRN website, I thought they would accept an EC grad provided they have the right amount experience to meet the "standarrs" of the CA brn.... and now from what I am reading, it seems like its their call. What if you were an EC grad with the ADN and then went on to get a bsn through a "traditonal" or "accepted" school, would you have a probelm then with the CA brn?

I am glad for this info
Well with the college network they are also in partnership with indiana state univ, which dealt with cali, sonoma state univ is where the clinicals are connected and actually indiana state univ also gives cali residents in their in state tuition rates.... Check the isu website and fyi there are multiple lvns that went through the college network/isu program as well as people that lost money also, so no you do not have to go to a brick and mortar school.

I am glad for this info
I have been reading about calif/isu. I plan to file complaints to get my money back. If the program has ended. What good is the college network in california? I read all around and found my contract and now I have something to use. I also saw that info on the calif brn website. I also noticed somewhere that isu wont be accepting anymore calif students so pretty much this means that sonoma state univ is done too because of the isu/college network/sonoma state univ partnership is ended?

HIPAA and Correctional Officers
I work in prisons now and the correctional staff dont have a right to know what imates are taking, that is HIPPAA, at least in CA, we dont discuss mediactions, illness, or anything when we are asked. We tell them straight, that we are not obligated to give them that info. Now will we do it if its something contagious?? We wont divulge, but we make sure the officers wear whatever protective equipment they need to wear, such as masks, gloves etc... As for mouth checks, we do it and the officers do it if we think there is a problem but those inmates, are going to "cheek" meds if they are going to do it. I have seen inmates get busted with crushed T-3's, handfuls of it.... and they are made to show us empty cups and all but he still managed to get a handful. Inmates will swallow and bring it back up.

Real vs fake chest pain
I work in prison and as for chest pains, I have to say that some fake it to get out to the hospital etc (some inmates ahve told me they would fake chest pains becasue they dont get what they want but there will be one that you think is faking and it turns out to be real) ... But I think that the vital signs give clues too. Use your judgement and intuition. and cover your self. If in doubt, send them to your "emergency area", better safe than sorry. This is just from my own experience and I have been dealing with jails and prisons for over 4 years now.

LPN considering corrections
I have worked in corrections for the last 4 years in florida and cali, its different state to state, in Fl, they arent pro-inmate, in cali, they are... the prisons in cali are like resorts. I love it though. You just have to find your niche in nursing. Your typical day could be easy and it could be hard. No two days are alike. Prison and Jail is very unpredictable, you just never know how your day is going to go. I say, try it and see if youlike it but one thing I will say to you is.... If your're scared, dont let on, inmates smell this miles away but if you decide to do it then once the imates know not to play with you, they will respect you. They treat you exactly how you treat them. If you have good officers then its good. As for meds, this will vary no matter where you go. I work in Cali now and I handle 3 bldgs plus diabetics and I am done with one bldg in about 25mins, but that takes practice though. Oh yeah, your coworkers matter too. If you have good coworkers, then your day is usually smooth. but if theyre selfish and lazy and you will be on your own. But its all good.

ISU FAQ thread
Hi all, I am looking into ISU's program but I am confused. Do you or dont you have to finish the prereq's before applying to ISU? I have info from them and I cant tell. Or should I apply for ISU, do the prereq's then apply to the school of nursing? And as far the math and english, some schools in cali want you to come take an assesment test??? I am trying to do these classes online and live far away from this school. Are all schools like that?
- Anyone did the Indiana State University LPN to BSN online?

Oh okay, I must be in the wrong state to work in a facility, in southeast florida it is $20 per diem but its a detention center so that may be the difference. Trying to get into traveling corrections.
