West Coast University - BSN Program

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi Everyone,

I got a 75% on my TEAS V test. I know I needed to get at least 85% on my Teas V score to be competitive on most BSN programs.

I found out that West Coast University is now accepting Teas V scores with a minimum score of 58%. So with a 75% score on the Teas V, I was a qualified applicant and I didn't have to take their HESI exam.

Once you're qualified based on taking their HESI or Teas V, the biggest qualifying factor you have is getting approved for Financial Aid or Private Student Loans. If you have all your finances straight, then that's when they secure your spot in their Nursing Program.

However, my biggest gripe right now and most of the students that I have spoken with is that they have a weird system of transferring credits. Each student I spoke to had different experiences on what classes transferred to that school and what didn't.

For example, WCU transfered all of my science classes that I took at Los Angeles Valley College:

Anatomy

Physiology

Microbiology

Psychology - Intro

Psychology - LifeSpan

BUT, they didn't transfer my General Chemistry.

They transfered my CAL STATE LA:

English 101/102 but they said that both my English 101/102 class that I took only transfers over to their English 140 Written Communication I, but not to their English 140 Written Communication II.

They also didn't transfer the following G.E. classes that I took in CAL STATE LA:

Philosophy

College Mathematics

Public Speaking

Their reason is that CAL STATE LA is a Quarter system and WCU is a Semester system. This is how they calculate it: 1 quarter unit = 0.67 semester unit

In addition, if they don't think your class is equivalent to their class they won't accept it as transfer credit.

My biggest advice is to go to their transfer credit website: 4

Miami (Doral) campus

Are they other private schools that are less expensive than WCU?

In california, there a couple I know of.

Western Governors

National University

Hi,

I am about to start the program in apri with 6 transferred classes. Can you give an update of your classes, your thoughts/advice, and current experience at WCU? Thanks

I'm currently finishing my OB term along with Natural Disaster and Medical Ethics. This coming Monday is my last final exam.

My next term consist of Pediatrics, Epidemiology, and Research.

My biggest advice is if you're taking some general education at WCU, try to overload (if they let you, because sometimes they don't) by taking a third class like medical ethics or epidemiology before you start your nursing core classes, so that you don't have to be like the most of us where we have to take 3 classes in a term (9 weeks = 1 term = 2 classes/term). It's doable to do 3 classes during nursing school, but it's more convenient and time efficient if you can focus on the important core classes.

My current experience at WCU is a mix bag of good and bad. I feel like certain professors in WCU make it easier for you (not that the test are easy, but they teach you the material better) versus others who seem to just read off the lecture powerpoint slides. I think I most dislike the fact that WCU doesn't let you see your test after taking the test, therefore, there's no way you can find out what you got right or wrong. I feel like this is very important because it lets us know what we need to study more and what we're good at.

On a positive note, WCU provides students various resources to help you pass your nursing classes such as tutoring, access to a library, and access to scholarly databases that you would regularly have to pay for. Furthermore, WCU offers volunteer and job opportunities in the community and LA County area while you are going to school.

I Transferred 9 classes: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochem, Microbio, English 1 and 2 (Written communication 1 and 2 at WCU), College math, Intro to Psych.

I would say yes It would be better to finish the General Ed classes at a CC before you transfer as it will save you a ton of money in Tuition and make your program at WCU a lot shorter as well... unless you dont mind paying the extra money then go ahead.. in a way it might be a bit faster at WCU since the terms at 10 weeks long as opposed to 16 weeks at a CC but then again its more pricey.. so its really up to you

and No you are not allowed to take side classes at a CC while in the Program, those classes will not count toward your degree at WCU.

Its either you finish your pre-reqs before you start or you take the classes at WCU. Another option I covered in one of my previous posts is to do an online Independent study program through Brigham Young Unversity, You can knock out about 2 classes in a Month (although each class costs about $500, much cheaper than WCU but more expensive than CC) and transfer those in to WCU before you start. They usually want the transcripts no later than a few days before your start date. once the terms start you cant transfer your credits anymore.

They accept students every 10 weeks, so a few times a year.. I applied about a month and a half in advance, once your financial aid/loans are all set up and ready to go then you are guaranteed a spot... you can always push back your start date as well if you didnt have enough time to finish your classes or for other reasons, I pushed back my start date twice cause I didnt finish my online pre-reqs before the start date.

feel free to ask more questions! I am glad I could contribute and help out :)

Hello, how much did you end up paying after transferring those classes? 80k? I am an LVN and last time I checked with them I was able to transfer 7 classes; however, I didn't go through with it but re-thinking about it. Please let me know. thank you!

Is anyone at west coast doing monthly payments? If so how much? I am interested in attending this school but I am afraid of not being able to afford it

Someone needs to protect you from yourself. First, you started out at Dade Medical College and for some reason, realizing that they were a fraud, went on to University of Southermost Florida (same owners as Dade Medical College). That School did not work out too well for you (I think you fail out of their program) and now you are looking at probably the MOST expensive For Profit Nursing Institution on the planet as your next stop. That would be three For-Profit Nursing program in a short time span.

I am curious, how much Student Loan Debt have you accumulated to date and how do you think you will be able to afford WCU astronomical Tuition? Who will co-sign for all the debt, since I don't think you will be able to qualify for this level of student loan on your own? I know these Schools target students with very weak academic stats, so that this might be what appeals to you. Have you given it any thought, to start over at a Community College and put some effort into getting good grades and applying to Accredited Schools with a legitimate Nursing Program? You seem to be a sucker for these scams....when will you learn? There is no short cuts in life and you will find this out the hard way when it is time to pay back all this student loan debt and you have exhausted all available options and you have no Nursing degree to show for all this debt.

Wow! What harsh words spoken to someone inquiring. There was no need to judge an individual based on their choice of schools. It is an individual choice. They are grown and can make decisions for themselves. No need to speak negativity towards anyone on this forum. It is no ones place to. How about offer friendly advice instead of negative and rude comments.

Now as far as West Coast University, it is not for low grade people or people who do poor in academics. They just don't have a wait list and you can start with them as long as you meet their requirements. They are very expensive $130,000 expensive so if you are not prepared to pay that kind of money then don't apply. I doubt they accept monthly payments. Never heard of a school that does that. You either pay out of pocket or get financial aid to assist. From other students, the program is very intense so if you are not at getting through programs, you may not want to try WCU.

You may want to check the other programs that offer programs at much cheaper cost and consider starting at ADN and then move into a BSN. West Coast is very very expensive and they are serious about their money. You can not work and go through the program so you could not afford a monthly payment anyway because they will charge an interest rate which will push your cost even higher.

Good Luck.

@ShondaJ appears to be either a major Stock Holder of the For Profit School or one of their unofficial recruiter. She tends to pop up out of the blue at the mere mention of the name West Coast University. She seems to have a vested interest in this overpriced school, with its low barrier to entry, mediocre NCLEX pass rate and unaccredited in some of their locations (Miami for example). @ShondaJ is part of the desperate subset potential nursing students that rely on schools like WCU as their last ditch effort at getting a BSN at any cost.

I will ignore her going forward, since she adds little or no value to any discussion concerning WCU, as she is just a booster for that institution.
