I am currently taking the prerequisite courses and planing to submit my application as soon as I finish the courses, but I am now working 3 day a week, sometimes 2 days in order to support myself. I am wondering whether I am still able to work part-time if I got accepted, does any of you guys worked while you were in the program? Thanks.

Good luck iburnlegs!! I'm graduating from the Oakland ABSN program next week. They sure don't waste any time starting the classes. For more than $50K per person, they sure what to put as many people in as possible.

Get ready for a wild ride. There will be a lot of stuff thrown at you very fast, but the time will fly and it will be so worth it when you are finished.

Hi BiggieCalie,

You have excellent stats, so try not to worry too much! Easier said then done, though - I'm just trying not to think about it too much and accept whatever happens. I have a couple of recommendations for your transcripts, though. I always order multiple copies of mine and have them sent to my home so that I have spares just in case. I also understand that SMU accepts unofficial transcripts as long as they get the official transcripts eventually. Maybe you could print your unofficial transcripts and mail them to SMU or drop them off? That might get everything moving along more quickly. Good luck!!!

On another note, anyone on here from East Bay? I live in Walnut Creek and volunteer at John Muir. On the chance that I get in, it would be awesome to find some friends to commute with and get to know some fellow ABSN students.

Thanks! I'm trying to remain positive. I think what I will do is go in with all of my unofficial transcripts as soon as the grades for this semester are available, that way they have the most up to date info. I am a little worried about my physiology grade this semester. I unfortunatly had the worst teacher in history...he laughed at us, made us feel stupid if we asked questions, and intentionally TRIED to trick us on tests. Kind of disappointing, but I think I will end up with a less than great grade in his class, which at this point may totally screw up my chances, but we will see. I'm not giving up hope yet. And I too am from the East Bay...a little farther east then you, I live in Brentwood, but would love to commute. I've heard that if you commute with 4 or more people that you get free parking...so that would be nice. I'll keep you updated, and thanks for the info on the unofficial transcripts. I'm going to bring them all in next week, I think that's when grades are available.

here' the latest e-mail message, for those who haven't received this yet or for the curious future applicant...

greetings from samuel merritt university. i know you have been waiting anxiously and patiently (thank you!) for an update on your absn application for fall 2009, san francisco.

your file has progressed to the next part of the admission process which is a careful read and review by the school of nursing faculty. this number will change a little bit, but at this point there are about 140 files that have been sent to the faculty, for a class of 48. so while competition is keen, you are to be congratulated for making it this far in the process.

q: why have some people heard from you and i haven’t?

a: the only official letters that have been sent out at this point are denial letters.

q: when will i hear from you next?

a: i hope we will get acceptance, wait list and denial letters out prior to the 4th of july. please keep in mind that where you live will determine how quickly the letter travels from oakland to you.

q: how will i hear?

a: we will make phone calls to accepted students and to the first 10 people on the waitlist. all other waitlist folks and denied folks will get a letter in the mail.

q: what if i want to be considered for the spring 2010 cohort in san mateo or sacramento with the july 1st deadline?

a: please hold off at this point. we are well aware of that looming deadline. we will give additional directions on that possibility as we finalize the class.

q: i have my spring 2009 grades now and want to send them to you.

a: please don’t. no new information will be added to your file at this point. unless you did not pass a class, as planned, we do not want to hear from you about new grades at this point!

q: when do prerequisites have to be completed for the november start date?

a: all prerequisites must (without exception) be completed by the end of august 2009.

q: oh, but what about a self-paced course? can that be taken in the fall?

a: no! all prerequisites, including self-paced courses must be completed by the end of august 2009.

q: who is the admission counselor working with this november applicant pool?

a: an admission counselor is working with your application. (edited to remove names and emails, per tos --- dianah, allnurses.com staff)

q: i am so excited, i want to reply to this email.

a: while i am excited for you too, i would ask unless you have something really critical that needs to be shared at this point, please hold off.

with best regards.

I just received that email, too. Congrats to us!

Just got that email today...

I'd like to know how much the 140 qualified apps is an increase of over last year...

Dear run2savelives,

I volunteer at JMMH too! ER every other wednesday.. however I'm trying to pick up shifts during my break.

What dept are you in and when do you work?

Mark here...

PS - I was thinking of getting my CNA during the summer break before school starts for the experience and exposure. No official direct patient contact experience at this point.

any comments..?

Well guys we're down to 140. Kinda sucks that any grades from spring won't be added to our applications. I don't think that is very good because I took both Anatomy and Physiology spring semester and now they won't even know that I did well...kinda sucks. Oh well, good luck to the rest of the 139 out there.

Hi Mark! I volunteer on Fridays now (used to be Mondays) from 9am to Noon on 6 east. I just switched days because I am taking Micro this summer Mon-Thurs. I also sub for menus on occasion. I get a little bit of patient contact (just talking) in both departments. I trained in the ED as well but decided to go with 6 east permanently because they keep me really busy and they're very flexible with my schedule.

On the CNA thing - I think this is an awesome idea. I plan on doing a CNA program right after I'm done with Micro so that I can work for at least a couple months before starting school if I do get in in November and then I'm hoping I can still work maybe a couple of days per month when in school. I agree that getting patient contact will be extremely important and I've been told that being a CNA will make Nursing clinicals easier. Have you looked into all the local programs yet? I'm pretty sure I'll choose Lifeline in Oakland.

Good luck!

Gabriela

I'm wondering how the current class is faring with their job search? Also, has anyone received a call from SMU?

I think we're all waiting for some kind of news...I've just emailed SMU to get an update. I personally don't want to have to take one last irritating prereq (Interpersonal Comm) this summer if I don't have to! :nono:
