LA Pierce College Nursing Students...feedback

U.S.A. California

I was just accepted into LA Pierce College's Generic ADN program for fall 2013 and I am just curious as to how current or former nursing students liked the program? Are the resources and instructors good? There really is not much posted about this program on allnurses...any feedback would be appreciated!! Thank you!

I accepted a spot @ moorpark for Fall 2013, but I just got an email today from Pierce saying I was accepted by them as well. As far as I know Moorpark has a great program, but Pierce is like 3 miles from my house, whereas Moorpark is like 30 lol...

FIRST WORLD PROLEMS!

Wow! Congratulations! I heard Moorpark has a good RN program as well. I haven't seen the campus, but I'm sure its as nice as Pierce. I would compare NCLEX pass rates to start and overall organization of the program and the classes, what hospitals do they do clinicals at, etc. that's just what I would do. Living 3 miles away is a huge plus, but the program you will benefit the most from is important...I wanted to apply to Moorpark, but they didn't accept some of my pre-reqs:( It looks like a great program, but let us know what you decide!!

You're welcome:)...I am a little nervous too...but excited nervous! We're starting nursing school in 3 months! YAY!!

I know!! It's coming up! I'm excited yet nervous at the same time too lol....so I was talking to someone who is in the fourth semester at Pierce right now and she said it's a good program. She said the program gets harder and harder (ofcourse) lol. She said at the end we will be spending a lot of time in clinical. She suggest that it's important to form a study group no more than 5 to motivate and help each other. She said in the beginning it's going to take us awhile to get used to the teaching method there because all they do is just lecture and not a lot of class discussions but we'll adjust to it and get the idea of how the class is going to be. Also we're required to pay for Kaplan access for the nclex prep every semester to help us get prepared for the nclex when we're done :)

That's so great you know someone in the program currently who can give you feedback-that helps! I really appreciate the info. on what to expect from the instructors/teaching method. Did your friend mention whether Pierce has a skills lab where you can practice technique on mannequins in a mock clinical setting? I didn't see anything on Pierce's nursing website, so I'm curious. I wonder if we have any medical-surgical classes because I am not seeing that on the course requirements (maybe the website is just general or hasn't been updated with courses).

I'm in over analyzing mode because I just got a call from Glendale Community College and was offered an alternate spot and potentially a permanent seat if the last few people decline their offers. I've been comparing GCCs program to Pierce and now I feel a little torn...I really like Pierce, but just want to make sure they offer comparable resources and courses.

I just gave up my GCC alternate spot like yesterday lol! And per your previous statement, I'll be attending Moorpark.

Yeah, she said we start med surg second semester. 3rd is labor and delivery with a little more med surg and 4th is pediatric and more med surg. I'm not sure if they have mannequins that we can practice on, I didn't ask but I'm sure we do. I think all nursing schools do. Yeah, I'm also an alternate at Pcc too and I was thinking the same too if they call me and offer me a spot, will I take it? Now that I talked to this girl who's in the fourth semester right now. I'm leaning more towards Pierce because she said pierce had a good reputation in the valley and plus its NLCN accredited (which idk if that matters) but I heard some hospitals look at that when you're trying to get a job like Kaiser :/

How funny! What made you turn down GCC? The fact that you got into Moorpark? Honestly, Moorpark sounds like a great program, I'm sure you'll be happy there! Congrats!

This is what she said, " Overall, the program is a good way to really learn what nurses do and the responsibility that comes with the job. It's a good program in that sense and the instructors are actively employed in the area. So they bring in their work experience too. The program has a good reputation in the valley, if that's where you plan to end up."

Thank for clarifying on the courses, that makes me feel better! You're probably right, all programs likely have a skills lab to practice clinical techniques, etc. I think I'm leaning towards Pierce for the same reasons, they have a good reputation and the NLN accreditation, whether or not it really matters. I've read posts saying that people have talked with recruiters at CHLA and Kaiser and they won't hire nurses who are not from an NLN program, so that definitely holds some weight in the decision for me too. I really do like Pierce's campus...they just did a bunch of reconstruction and it looks really nice and maintained. Its just so strange that barely anyone posts about the program on allnurses! lol

That is a plus that the instructors are actively employed nurses or FNPs in the area. I think that makes a difference to have someone who actually uses the skills they are teaching on the job.

Yes, and thanks!

Anyone happen to know where Pierce's clinical sites are located?

Yeah the NLN accredited is making me lean towards Pierce more too because now tht the job market is really bad. I want to have as many options as possible. Since Pierce is NLN accredited and if its going to open more ways for me to get a job (cause like I said some hospitals look at that). I think it's the right decision to choose Pierce. It's up to you if you feel like Gcc is better for you then go with that. I also heard GCC program is good too! Talking so someone who actually is going there right now made me feel a lot better about Pierce :)

Yes, and thanks!

Anyone happen to know where Pierce's clinical sites are located?

Well based on what I have heard, the 2 clinical sites I know of are Olive View County Hospital in Sylmar and Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills.
