Quick question - I know job experience is most important to have. But do you guys think it would be most beneficial to have a preceptorship in OB or Med Surg? I would really want a job in peds/OB but I wouldn't be picky when it comes to seeking jobs. M/S would get me general experience for all fields. But I am concerned if somehow I was considered for an OB or Peds job, they would want experience or preceptorship in the specific field.
That's tricky. I would say it's up to you. I know some Peds or NICU new grad programs require or have a preference for grads that precepted in that area but others don't considering it's hard to always place students in those specialities. However Med/Surg will help you build those core nursing skills. I precepted in the NICU and I could apply those skills to any position. For example, critical care skills/thinking, patient education, time management, etc. Those skills can apply to ED, ICU, Med/Surg, and so on. It's ultimately up to you and how comfortable you are with you potential job future.

Hi! kendrella89. Thanks for replying. I am not currently working. Some clinics that I know give RN 10 dollars per hour. I used to work for adult day care center. It was okay. They cut down money and time now. I don't want to go back. I think I will forget all nursing skills there if I continue to work there because it was mostly office job. I think it will be good for old, retired RNs who want easy job. I want to work at skilled nursing facility, but they want experienced RNs. I want to learn something, I want to grow, develop, be challenged, pursue my dream. However, I can't if I work at clinic or adult day care center. I already have enough experiences at clinics and day care center. I don't want it. Yeah, I am not happy with the pay too. I cannot pay car payment, house bills... with that money.
I understand completely. It's difficult trying to stay "fresh" when you're slowly turning brown.

Hi my name is kcasper. (I know this is for Cali, I'm up in Oregon with the same issues.) License Type: BSN Time out of school: 18 mths (licensed in OR and WA)# Positions applied to date: at this point...probably over 200 Dream RN Position: I still don't know my dream job! Hospital Experience: I worked 3.5 months in State Hospital Where do you live: Portland, OR What are you doing now: Filling out apps, interviewing (when the nursing gods are benevolent and grant me an interview), being a housewife, School Nurse Contract position...Favorite Color: blue/greenHow I cope with unemployment: I have started sewing quite a bit in between applying for jobs.*sigh* 2012 has been such a hard year for me. I got a job as a pysch nurse in the state hospital here in Oregon. I was very excited to finally have an RN position. 3.5 months into the job, I was reviewed by my boss, who rarely saw me work, and was told I was unfit for this position. She gave me a 4 page negative review. It was all heresay by female coworkers who are CNAs on the psych ward. A week later I was escorted off the premises. My RN preceptor was appaulled..He and the other RN's were impressed with my work and thought I was making good progress...So began my search again for another job. I was only unemployed for a week and a half. I landed another job in a nursing home. I was there for 3 months when one day I was told I was being taken off the schedule indefinitely after I had just worked a unit I was not trained on. Ok fine. I then find out that a coumadin order had been missed on my shift and a pt went without meds for 2 days. This same order that I missed, was passed on by 3 nurses all with the excuse, 'I don't have time to process this.' So I was laid off for that. Then they threatened to call APS and the state board of nursing. I was denied unemployment because they said my actions were malicious. (I later proved it was a rooky oversight)...My confidence was SOOO shot after that. I was pretty sure that my luck was never gonna turn around. I started applying again. I landed an interview at another nursing home. I felt like there was some hope in this world. THEN I landed another interview with a REAL hospital in a psych ward. The interview went so well I was very sure I had the job. A week and a half later I started calling back the DNS to ask about the interview. I never heard anything back. I ended up declining the nursing home job offer thinking I was gonna be working at the hospital...3 weeks after the interview at the hospital, I received an email congratulating me on becoming part of the team at this hospital! I was so exicted. I emailed them back and told my family. The day before Thanksgiving, I received a phone call from the DNS saying that the email had been sent to me by mistake and I was not hired. When I asked her why she hadn't responded to my emails or phone calls, her excuse was, 'I was busy'. um...She had 4 weeks to give me a simple call, 'hey you were not selected, sorry'. I was LIVID. I am now working as a School Nurse. It's a contract position for 8 weeks. I really hate not knowing where my career future is headed. With my horrific resume, I fear that employers will see me as a risk instead of an investment. I'm very thankful that my husband has a job, but at this point we are thinking about moving else where...so maybe not Cali...seems things are hard down there too. Well Oregon isn't that much better at all. Good luck to all. I truely believe there is a reason for everything and that things will work out the way they are supposed to work out. Just have to be patient. -k

Hey guys, has anyone applied to hospitals in smaller cities? I know the big cities are saturated with new grads. I'm not from California but I do want to apply to some smaller cities in the San Diego area. Any ideas on hospitals or small cities I could look into? Thank you.

Just wanted to say good luck to all of you! I know how it feels to be a new grad practically begging for a job. Sometimes it takes time and other times it really takes perseverance. And if you're completely open to relocating, sometimes that's even better. But anyway, GOOD VIBES TO ALL OF YOU!!! Hope this new year brings wonderful job opportunities for you all!

I've looked in to several and I can't think of any names off the top of my head but you can look for a map of the counties in California and focus on those that are way up North and Central Valley
