most hospitals have volunteer programs. volunteer! call the hospitals near you and ask to speak to the person in charge of the volunteer programs and then ask that person what you need to do to be a volunteer.

WoW. You sound so much more serious than I was at your age. :rolleyes:

My advice is that when you are looking at colleges or universitys for you RN that you take a look at things like how hard is it to get into the nursing program.

At many places, just becasue you are at a school as a nursing major DOES NOT mean that you will automatically get into the nursing program. You usually have certain classes you must take (called pre-reqs) and do well, to apply. From there, schools have a way of selecting students.

Some do that by GPA, some random lottery and some both.

Excellent idea.

The UCLA hospitals in Westwood and Santa Monica have volunteers working four hours or more a week right along with nurses. I met one once who told me she chose to volunteer in ICU. Also try the CNA web site - http://www.calnurse.org/?Action=Category&id=245

Do you guys really think I'm going to have trouble getting into nursing school or the nursing major? I'm a very good student, have a high SAT score, and am very driven and passionate about nursing, health science, etc. Unfortunately not many people like me seem to go into nursing. People keep saying to me, "But you're so smart. Why don't you want to become a doctor?"

Uuuuuum, they're two different fields. My father is a doctor, and I know what that's like, and I don't want it. Uch, it drives me insane! I get asked that almost daily!

The nursing are very competitive. Being smart is good but not the only thing you need to succeed.

About ppl telling you that you are so smart, and why you don't become a Dr. ? etc....... You will always find people like that. In this age and time there are lots and lots of people who are clueless as what a nurse actually does. They have a huge misconception that the doctor usually does everything and you are just there to help. For lack of a better word......they are unaware of all the great and important things nurses do.

Just kindly state your reason, and don't ever get too confident or a "big head" about being smart (no offense pls). There are tons of extremely smart nurses. Not just doctors are smart. :)

I consider myself an average Joe although everyone tells me how bright I am, and this and that. While it is a compliment....I am not getting too engrossed in it. When you do get into pre-nursing you are going to know what I am talking about. You are going to be in competition with oodles of people who are just as smart if not smarter than you are. Trust me, the thoughts will be racing in your head. Just prepare like you are doing and you will be fine.
