CSUSB Fall 2012 Hopefuls

U.S.A. California

Hey everyone!

Well we made it mighty far and now we are done with pre reqs and on to applying!

I am applying to the 2012 cohort and would like to invite everyone else that is applying to post here for any questions, concerns or comments!

Well I am about to put in my application. So far I have all pre reqs done, pending algebra this winter intersession. My Teas test is done, my letters of rec are on their way and basically all I am waiting for is final transcripts!

Good luck to everyone who applied

Let the wait begin!

Got my letter! Whoop Whoop.

Ok well technically I don't have it physically but my Aunt has my letter and I wont pick it up til Monday. But at least its there! Once my work weekend is over its time to turn in my acceptance!

Now that you all are in....Can you give me an idea of the stats

I'm currently a CSUSB student, I have a 3.3 gpa (super low but I've brought it up from 3.0 undergrad) and my teas was 79 (do they penalize for retaking?)

Hey there! Do you mean your overall GPA is 3.3 or your pre req?

CSUSB only looks at your GPA for the 9 pre req classes on the website under pre-nursing. You do not (as far as I know for this quarter) get penalized for retaking the TEAS. Its unlimited as far as how many times you can take it. Do not forget to include 2 letters of rec, proof of bilingual ability (if you have any) and attend an info session! Those are all points that you will need/use to get into the program. Best of luck!

Try for winter, its an easier quarter to get into!

Well, I have 2 semesters of Spanish and 2 quarters of Chinese, I have already attended an info session but yes my overall is 3.3, my pre-req all depends on what they take...like English 1 I got a B but English 2 an A....Most of my Pre-Reqs are A's and B's (honestly more B's than A's). Do you know how they calculate the points? I've already been rejected from ELM from APU (I honestly think they didn't give my app a far shot since pages were missing from both of my transcripts!) and I'm a bit discouraged! But this school is convenient being I literally love across the street at University Park

Well I would definitely determine your pre req GPA to find out where you stand. How you do this is to take your list of classes and line them up following each, put the units and the grade. Now the easiest ball park like way is to give As 4 points, Bs, 3 points, Cs, 2 points etc... Now you multiply each classes units by the grade. Example: Anatomy: 4 units grade A = total points for class is 16. So after you get each classes points. You add up all the points. Then you add up all the units (NOT POINTS)

You take the points and divide them by the units (?) Make sure you get a whole number like 3.3 or something if you do it back words you will get some small decimal like 0.012.

That is the short cut version of calculating your GPA. Once you get that number that is your pre req GPA they most likely will use. Now remember this give you an approximate, like I calculated my pre req GPA to be 3.83 but they got 3.79. Depends if they could pluses minuses or quarter units/semester units.

Anyway ask them if your spanish/chinese would count. But that is all I know for now. Sorry you got rejected from APU. You really do not want to spend $30,000/semester for nursing anyway. That is too much of an expensive for the lack of jobs available.

Well once I calculated my approximate GPA, it's still only a 3.5 =( with Pre-reqs and half of my classes were from another university so they are in semester units and the others are in quarter from CSUSB

Honestly, nursing programs aren't easy to get into, especially at Cal States since it is so compacted. What I suggest you do is maybe retake some of the pre reqs you took at another university to raise your Pre Req GPA. English is an easy class to retake and maybe raise your B to an A. (That's what I did) I say your TEAS score is pretty good, I mean it was higher than mine lol.

I agree with good ol' lnd on this one.

The great thing about this particular CSU is they don't hold you back because of previous bad or ok grades. Like, I too, got a C in my critical thinking for English. I retook the philosophy critical thinking (logic) and got an A. CSUSB takes the A over the C. Other CSUs like CSULA and CSULB only look at the first grade taken. Also CSUSB doesn't look at overall GPA. Which is a good thing for both of us. I mean if they took my overall GPA, I probably wouldn't have made it in.

A 3.5 isn't bad. Honestly. I do not know what the cut off GPA for this cohort but I know it was probably 3.65 or above depending. I would try to apply in winter. It is the easier and less applicant filled of an application period than fall. If you do not get in (I would retake english or something while you wait and ace it!). If you get in, great! If you don't then at least your GPA would have risen and you could have a better chance for fall.

Like lnd said, nursing programs throughout SoCal are extremely competitive and the CSUs are probably the hardest. Some ADN programs are hard to get into as well. Keep your options open and apply everywhere! I applied to 3 CSUs and 2 ADN. I got interviewed at CSULB then rejected, rejected from CSULA, alternate at Citrus and accepted at RCC and CSUSB. Apply to as many places as you can. Its better to start your career now, even with an ADN then wait years just to get into one school.

Here are my grades:

Micro* B

AP I*. A-

AP II*. C but I'm retaking for an A

English. B

Oral Comm. B

Comm 180*. B

Math. A

G Chem. A

Bio Chem*. B

All of the starred were taking at CSUSB which I CANNOT retake because they passed a bill I'm which we cannot retake a course we got a C in unless special permission from the Dean of Students (which I was able to get a pass for AP II). My grades aren't bad at all but the issue is my undergrad was only a 3.0 which is why it's low!

Theoretically, all I could retake is English 101 (which if they let me choose English 102 then that's an A) and Public Speaking. Idk of two classes will bring up my gpa by that much. I'll definitely try applying for winter and hopefully I will get in somewhere....I'm also applying to LLU as well so you gave me some great ideas with RCC and Citrus

Right now you'd have a prerequisite GPA of 3.448 (assuming you get your A in AP II) (They don't care about your overall GPA at CSUSB, as long as you meet the 2.5 minimum). If you're applying for winter you probably wouldn't have time to retake any classes unless you're planning to do it over summer. I know the winter session is easier to get into than fall, however I'm not sure of the stats for winter. Loma Linda isn't as picky with GPA however it's probably gonna cost an arm and a leg. If you retake English (107) and Public Speaking (Comm 120) and get A's your GPA would boost to a 3.653. Those classes were a breeze at CSUSB so you shouldn't have a hard time getting an A in those classes. I would suggest just applying to winter, it doesn't hurt to apply. Make sure you get all the possible application points such as bilingual proficiency, 2 letters of rec, San Bernardino County residency, and advising session attendance. If worst comes to worst and you don't get into winter I suggest retaking English and Comm and apply for fall.

Thanks, I will definitely try. I can absolutely get 2 letters, like I said I have 2 semesters of Spanish as well as 2 quarters of Chinese and I live right across the street from CSUSB. I've also already attended the Pre-advising session so hopefully they can see that I'm a hard working student and worth it to take a chance on!

lnd hit the nail on the head!

She is absolutely right. Try and retake what you are able to retake and get As. You pre req GPA isn't bad, it just may not be competitive enough. Definitely not for fall but maybe for winter. And lucky for you and me, CSUSB doesn't even glance at overall GPA unless you have less than a 3.0 (minimum effective winter 2013). So I would apply everywhere and don't forget the supplemental stuff!

I think you will be good to go! Good luck!
