CSULB Fall 2012 BSN

U.S.A. California

Hi!

I think the CSULB School of nursing recently post new pool statistics including those who were chosen for Fall 2011.

http://www.csulb.edu/colleges/chhs/departments/nursing/docs/PoolStatsFall11.pdf

Knowing that the rating average is 8.91/10, that seems like a huge difference than the previous semesters!

Anyone else planning to apply to CSULB Fall 2012 BSN program?

Wait I'm confused, so you retook GE's and got a better grade but due to the new rules you have to submit the first grade you initially got?

Ok so waay back when I started college at 18, summer after high school i took trig and got a B. meh oh well didn't know what I wanted to do, so i took other GE's and did well to ok, then i take a critical thinking class, an english one (not my best subject) and got a C. well I took the regular freshman english and got a B and got a B in speech. I could have fought the speech one because my teacher was biased on the debate speech I gave and that is how my grade sunk from an A to a B.

So looking at that that is

So for the GE category, I have a 3.5 which, to me, is totally fair. I didn't know I wanted to be nurse then and blahblahblahblah

So I find out while taking logic class that CSULB CHANGED THEIR RULES. Now only the first GE taken (in my case, trig for math and english for critical thinking) is counted toward the GE GPA category. so that is how I disqualified! I mean i have been encouraged to apply anyway like I did, but I have a feeling that it wont be enough. I mean I believe my score is competitive enough for once but if they see that the first class on my transcript is trig and i put stats on my app, well there is a problem.

i wouldn't mind fighting with CSULB over it and putting an appeal because the application does NOT state that you have to put the 'first GE taken.' If they want us applicants to take it seriously then they should put it on there. UNLESS it is to scare people like me to apply? well I am hoping with that "addition" of applicants they wont have enough time to actually go through the application and pick at each and every course. i am really hoping the transcript is just there to verify that what grades you put on the app are the grades you got. but who knows? i feel that i am going to be disqualified on something that they intentionally changed!

what i dont understand is that if they changed the rules to shooo away applicants like myself, to cut down the amount of applicants applying then why are they letting 2nd degree seekers in? I am pretty sure that is why they changed the rule, but they really just screwed themselves over because people like me are still going to apply and you are still going to get the qualified applicants like yourself PLUS the second degree seekers.

Idk their dept is whack, luckily they have one of the best programs in So. CA so I think that is they only thing holding us all here!

***oh I did NOT submit the first grade I got.

ha ha ha! i am at least going to try get in, and if that is putting the better grades on there, then so be it :)

we should all have a 2nd chance, i mean the 2nd degree seekers are getting a double second chance...why cant i?

My goodness, if I were in your shoes I would definitely complain. Maybe they would be understanding enough to keep you as a valid applicant because you were going by their rules until they all of a sudden changed it on you while you were in the process of retaking different GE courses. It's not like you knew the rules ahead of time and took the classes anyway and tried to get passed them yknow? But if you ever would confront them about it, DON'T CALL! You saw my experience. You would just get hung up on with rude remarks. You would have to go there and complain face to face! To me, it seems like a small error that even I wouldn't notice. Not sure how closely they look at applications, but for me when I got that call about my A&P courses (which are on THEIR science equivalency list), I told the coordinator it was on the list and she emailed me back saying "Sorry. No need for the syllabus now."

You would expect that they were professional enough to compare courses that people took elsewhere to their own science equivalency list right? Their high acknowledgement of being one of the best nursing schools in California including UC's really is the only reason why I want to get in. If they weren't, CSUS would probably be my first choice since it is 2 years AND you get your summers! Plus they have just as high NCLEX rates as CSULB.

i know right! I actually did retake the stats class AFTER i found out about change while retaking a GE but the A that the logic class gave me would have bumped me out of the disqualified pile and onto the qualified but low points pile. I was planning on using my trig grade plus my logic class grade anyway.

UNTIL i took the TEAS and did crap on it. Then I decided, screw it, I am going to put both better grades. That way IF (big big BIG IF) at least I would look competitive. I never lied on the application. I stand by what I said, I have no problem pointing out to the director that they did not state to put the first GE and its grade on the application.

So basically I did waste my time redoing a class in CSULB's eyes but it helped my other applications though. The only 'bright side' to this.

As for contacting, I would never call. I have emailed before and the chick who is in the office she is quite, IDK, mean and condescending in her mails. I just wish they would treat us all with respect. Is that a lot to ask for?

I think that is bogus that you listed courses that the school THEMSELVES listed and they still questioned you??!? WOW!

Where did you do your science courses that they had a problem with?

I was really banking on them seeing so many applicants that they are not really looking closely enough to notice the issue. But since they scrutinized your application, in the most moronic way, why shouldn't mine get the same treatment.

As I say, all we can do is try. I think the change of the rules basically was a way to tell me that CSULB wasn't for me (or on a more optimistic side, that I had to more to fight for it, doubt it though)

I don't know. Only next week will tell us... Thank God its going to be in an email format that way I don't have to wait for a disqualification through snail mail

Maybe you should focus on CSUS. School is good, program is good and maybe the staff is nice and actually cares about their students. If I was able to move, I would have applied there as well....

That's true. Raising your GE GPA was good for your applications to other schools, and may have gotten you a shoe in. I honestly haven't had any positive remarks about CSULB since I've gone here out of high school. I don't know if you've read my other threads, but their way of handling pre-nursing students was like we're undeserving of being there. I don't know why they admit SO many pre-nursing students when the pre req science classes are so impacted. A lot of my friends that are juniors still have 2 pre-req sciences to take and that is just ridiculous. Ideally we are supposed to be done with our sciences in 2 years, which is IMPOSSIBLE at CSULB. And aside from nursing, I've had some bad experiences on campus when trying to get answers regarding other issues. Kinda sad that the experiences I've had on campus reflect exactly how the School of nursing is too.

I went to La Sierra University for Anatomy and Physiology I and II. I have a family member attending LLU for Physical Therapy and heard about this school. Although it's a private school and was very expensive, I got 2 of my sciences out of the way in the summer and received A's in both. If I had waited to get in A&P at CSULB, I would probably not apply till another semester or two. I hadn't gotten into my first pre-req science (Chemistry) until I was a sophomore, spring semester. So exactly one year ago! Kinda crazy to think I did all 4 sciences in 1 year, but I am glad I don't have any this semester. When attending LSU, I really did not like the Riverside area. That's kinda the reason why CSUSB isn't a school that I REALLY want to get in.

And how do you know we are getting an email next week? The deadline for CSULB is Feb 15, won't they wait until the application cycle is over to send out interview emails?

OH I see, of course, CSULB's ego will soon backfire on how they treat people. Man that is ridiculous!

I see, so you went somewhere private to get your A & P out of the way. Understandable. It would even more understandable if CSULB did NOT have them on their course equivalency list but alas, they did and they still accused you have not being able to transfer them in.

WOW. Maybe you should go for CSUS.

As for the sciences, I didn't have a problem. I am 22 going on 23, I have been at my CC since I was 18. So I have not had a problem getting into the pre reqs. I did however take a detour to Cal Poly Pomona to be a engineering major when I was working a job that didn't allow me to take the pre req classes at the time. But that major wasn't for me and I failed out, hence why more overall GPA sucks. Oh well life goes on.

As for the Riverside area...hmmm... see I have pretty much grown up in LA county area. So I am used to the suburbs. I wouldn't mind the drive east because that is opposing traffic. The area is not a big deal neither is the school I get into. What matters is that I get in and graduate and get licensed. But I have been in college and had the 'college' experience. But you are younger then me ya? So you would want a good college in a good area to get that 'college experience'

As for the email. No I am saying I will get an DISQUALIFICATION email next week. They will send it out quick, one less applicant to deal with. But interview emails are sent out in mid March I think

Yeah I would like to move out from living with my parents, and what better way to do that during than during nursing school when its only a 2-3 year committment and I will make close friends in my cohort? At least you know exactly what you want to do now! I've known I wanted to be a nurse since high school and throughout taking my pre-reqs I was not confident at all. But now that I finally applied it is so exciting, nervewracking, and scary at the same time!

Is official transcripts are opened outside the envelope they cam in, are they voided?

Yeah, official transcripts have to be sealed. If it has a small tear I don't think it's a big deal but if it's completely open then they aren't "official" anymore.

Great! xD Thanks, I just wanted to make sure.

At least you guys will find out if your worthy like mid March! That is like he first school to send out notices. I like that its near he closing application period. Some schools take like 6 months to let us know anything!
