CSULB-ELMSN Fall 2011

U.S.A. California

Published

Hey everyone so I have been waiting for a couple of years to finally have all of the pre-reqs done to be able to apply to nursing school. I am finally finished and am just waiting for CSULB-elmsn's program which will start in Fall 2011. I want to know who else is planning on applying so we can have each other to go through the process with and I'm not going to lie I would really like to see what the competition is like. Goodluck to everyone. I look forward to meeting you in the fall!

No. I still need to register for it. I wanted to take it after December so I can focus on my finals. Have you taken it yet? Did you take it at CSULB?

Yeah I took it back in June. I was actually living in San Diego at the time so I took it at San Diego State University. It doesn't really matter where you take it as long as you take version 4. I feel like I did average on it for a masters program bud did well on the math portion. Which is why I am kind of throwing all of my eggs in one basket and only applying to Long Beach. Hopefully it all works out. Good luck it is nice to take it as soon as possible after you take your pre-reqs because that information is fresh in your head.

Hey all,

I'm currently in the program now (Fall 2010) and here's a coupla things I want to mention as an FYI:

1. Try to maximize your TEAS score as much as possible. I think mine were somewhere around 92% overall and 96% in math. The TEAS score matters a great deal and may be the boost you need to get in.

2. Your personal statement, volunteer hours, experience do not matter/make a difference to the application. Sad but true. So don't work your butt off to try to gain all those extra hours if you may not have the time. However, with any kind of patient experience, you will notice it will help A LOT when it comes to clinicals. You're not scared to approach the patient and catch on to theories/ideas a lot faster than your peers who do not have any experience at all.

3. I believe that the GPA used in the 10 point calculation is actually the GE GPA. So those are the pre-req classes OTHER than the science pre-reqs that are listed (critical thinking, quantitative, psych... etc).

The minimum GPA of 3.0 is applied overall (the entire 4+ years of your prev degree) as a general criteria to just apply. After you pass that marker of having at least a 3.0 in your previous degree, it's not used to calculate into that 10 point score.

Hope that helps.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice! It is nice to have someone on this thread that is actually attending the program. Can you tell us about the program. What you like and maybe something things you wish were a little different. Did you apply to anywhere else besides Long Beach and if you did why did you chose Long Beach? Sorry for all of the questions I am just excited to talk to someone who has achieved what I am hoping for. I have read on a couple of different threads that Long Beach has some sort of deal with one of the local hospitals where you can sign a 2 yr contract with them stating that you will work for them after graduation and they will help a little with tuition is this true? I read this about the traditional BSN route I was wondering if it is true for the ELMSN route as well. Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my questions. I look forward to hopefully starting in the fall!

The program is fast, classes are done in about 4-6 weeks. Don't expect to learn everything from the lectures, there's a lot of self-teaching in these courses. The tests are pretty much application based, so don't focus on the facts too much but actually on how to apply the knowledge to real-life scenarios.

I like the program alright. Are there things I'd change about it? Yes but then again I AM in an accelerated program so I really can't change the structure or ask for anything like that. Key point----->Learn to be flexible. Like REALLY flexible. I chose this program because of the BSN/MSN combo. It's one of the few schools that do it.

The Long Beach Memorial program/contract is with the traditional programs only. Doesn't apply to the ELM program because this program is designed for students to go straight into the MSN, not necessarily for students planning to work after achieving the BSN/RN licensure. Now, that's not saying that you cannot work during the MSN program, but if you plan do, expect to be juggling/struggling to accomplish a lot to balance work and school, because the MSN part appears to be a full-time thing. Not there yet, but that's pretty much what I've been told (by students and faculty).

Hope that helps a bit.

That is fantastic thank you! If I can think of any more questions I will be sure to ask. Please let us know if you can think of anything else that would help us before we enter school. My score is 9.3 I am hoping that is enough to get me in. My grades were average but like you I did really well on the TEAS. I have noticed that every year it gets a little harder to get accepted into the program. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Oh actually one more thing I was planning on taking pharm and pathopharm at Golden west next semester do you think this is a good idea or should I just wait till fall and take it at Long Beach?

Does anyone know how soon transcripts should be submitted after completing the csumentor application?

Hey Sam,

I submitted my transcripts as soon as I filled out the application online. So somewhere around Oct. 4th! :) Man I wish it was August already... The wait is killing me

Alrighty thanks! I just completed the CSUmentor application this past weekend , so I will go ahead and send them out soon! They didnt have to be received by Nov. 30th did they? And, yes, it sure is a long wait : )

malefocker-Also, dont know if you caught this, but on the web-site it says that the next information meeting is Fall 2011. good thing they are offering another one!

Fall 2011... nice! Well I guess at this point it doesn't really matter! If I get in I am going. I was curious. I know you are applying to a couple different direct entry masters programs. Do you know what you want to specialize in? I wonder if this is something we should know or is it ok to go to start school and figure out after we get some clinical and classroom hours under our belt.

oops I meant Feb 2011! Haha.

I am planning to specialize in pediatrics. I have volunteered in general hospitals with adult patients and children, and also have volunteered with a children's hospital. I absolutely love peds. I assume that since no prior nursing experience is required for long beach-you can gain experience during clinicals and find what fits for you.
