Are new graduate RN's being hired in Orange County, CA?

U.S.A. California

Hello,

I will be graduating with an RN degree this December. I plan on taking my nclex shortly after. I will be applying for a new grad position in South Orange County, CA. Does anyone know if the hospitals are hiring new grad RN's? HOAG hospital would be ideal. It seem that, no matter where I look, there is a hiring freeze on nurses. I am concerned that I will not be able to find a job.

Thank you!

Worry about finding a job when that time comes. Right now concentrate on finishing school and passing NCLEX.

This contradicts what the director of our program is telling us. We need to start figuring out where we want to work and start looking into new grad programs. The time has come. Please do not post unless you have some constructive advice.

Wow that sounds kind of rude but oh well. It is true you should look for job now but probably 99% of the hospitals wont even bother with you until you pass your nclex and graduate. Make sure you can get good recommendations from instructors. hope that helps.

i thought it was rude as well. i posted a very valid concern and question. both my concern and question were shot down by her. oh well... lol. being that we can obtain a temporary permit to start working with an rn, contingent upon passing the nclex, we need to start looking now. at our 4th semester orientation, the director urged us to start looking into employment opportunities now. we also need to start applying soon to new grad programs. it worries us soon-to-be new grads that there are hiring freezes everywhere we look. most of the new grads from the previous class had to leave our area and find work elsewhere. only 8 were hired at the local hospitals. i intend on looking into orange county, ca. i still need to know if they are hiring new grads out there. good advice on the recommendations from instructors. thank you!

I can tell you that some places have very limited openings for new graduate RN's. Last I heard was that Hoag does have new graduate opportunities, however, they are VERY limited. We're talking like 10 spots, and it's not uncommon for approximately 1000 new graduates to apply. You would want to contact the HR department, or attempt to surf the hospitals website to see if they provide information on their new graduate programs there. here is hoag's link:

Career Opportunities: Nursing: New Graduate Program

Things that I would start preparing now are:

Your resume - include ANY relevant health care experience

Letters of recommendation -seems like most of them want at least one, if not two, clinical instructors as well as a previous employment letter.

Any awards you have obtained, high GPA, etc

ACLS? (if you have time for it, do it)

The things that put you in an odd spot post-graduation is that many of the new graduate programs now want to see your RN license before they promise you a spot. Not saying you can't compete, but there enough grads now who have been out of school a few months and already have it, and it does give them an advantage. No harm in trying though.

Good luck to you

I gave you constructive advice. Do you really want to hear that there are no jobs? I mean really nothing is going to change much from one day to the next. Your thread is not the first one in this vein. You might get fortunate and get hired, and then you might not. But if you do not finish school and pass NCLEX, this is all a moot issue. Do not post on a public board with expectations for responses unless you post what it is that you want to hear. And good luck. How can not finishing school and not passing NCLEX help?

And by the way, the OP chose to take my answer in the wrong way. I meant that her first concerns should be elsewhere. So much for constructive answers, taken the wrong way because it suits someone's mindset. And yes, I know someone who got her head turned around before graduation. She did not graduate with her class because she was worried about everything but graduation. I would hate for something like that to happen to anyone before it is time to worry about the job market.

i believe i made it pretty clear with regard to my expectations for a response. i directly asked if hospitals were hiring in oc. i did not ask about passing the nursing program or the nclex. with a 4.0 gpa for the past three and a half years, i have zero doubt as to my ability to graduate or pass the nclex. i also did not ask for my concern to be labeled as irrelevant. some areas are hiring and some are not. the internet is an excellent resource to determine which areas and hiring and which are not.

Very helpful!! Thank you!

Yikes I was actually talking about OP's comment. Anyway I agree with CAliotter. I was in you shoes last January I started my job search earlier, started applying, etc. etc. It didnt do much good. It only stressed me out a bit until I realized I needed to concentrate on finishing. Employers are now asking for your transcripts and good recommendations (naturally) so dont burn your bridges with any of your instructors.

Does anyone know if HOAG already posted their applications for the Nov. 1 program? I have been checking and have not seen anything..Maybe it's just too soon.. Anyone know? I also applied to Glendale Memorial and still haven't heard from them.
