Applying to Sacramento State for spring 2015 question

U.S.A. California

Published

I am applying to Sacramento State for Spring 2015. I still need to take Physio and a few misc. classes like food and nutrition, an arts course, and a english critical thinking course. What I am wondering is this: If I were to take Physio during the summer, got an A lets say, would Sac consider me over other applicants because I have completed all my pre-reqs and co-reqs? I have a 4.0 right now. I am debating whether I should take this Physio summer class at a JC an hour away because the professor is better than the one I would be taking in the fall at a closer JC. Let me know what you think!

Hi everyone! I've been secretly following this forum for the past few weeks and decided I would finally make an account and say hello. I applied for the Spring 2015 cohort and I am so anxious to find out if I'll get in!! The waiting is killing me. Hopefully we hear this month! Does everyone here know what type of RN they'd like to be? Do you have a special interest? My goal is to eventually become a nurse-midwife and women's health nurse practitioner! Families and babies are my absolute favorite people to serve, and I also LOVE reproductive health. Looking forward to hearing what all of you are aspiring to be!

I'm thinking about women's health NP too, but I'm not positive yet. It is definitely what I'm leaning toward right now, but I'm looking forward to gaining experience in the program, and maybe I'll find out that I prefer a different specialty :)

The wait is driving me crazy too! I get more anxious the closer it gets. I think we'll find out around the 25th, which will be here before we know it! I know sometimes (at least one other time) they send an email out a week or two before decisions come out, saying how many points the student ranked 80 and 120 have. I hope they do that, since it will give us an idea of where we are. I keep checking my email and spam box for that email, but nothing yet.

I hope we all get in! :)

I could go on for pages but that is the gist. Remember that you earned your spot in the program and that takes a lot. Just focus on what you need to and don't let yourself get behind. There is a reason SacState has the highest NCLEX pass rate in the state. It's because they cover the material well and prepare you for what you need to know. I wish you success as you get ready for this adventure. Hope this helps. :cheeky:

There are several schools that have a higher pass rate than Sac State did during the 2012-2013 academic year. I've yet to see the 2013-2014 pass rates posted. That being said, Sac State does have a very impressive pass rate history. Sac City also has a very good pass rate, but the BRN (and possibly NCSBN) combines the extension program with the main program so that definitely skews things. The main program only has about 65 students per year.

It would definitely be interesting to see the Sutter-SCC extension program's pass rate, SCC main campus pass rate, and Sac State's pass rate just to see how they all compare.

akulahawkRN,

There is no reason to be argumentative and condescending when I was simply trying to help and encourage someone.

I was merely making a point, not arguing that SacState has the highest pass rate to the thousandths place, nor was I breaking down the exact pass rates based on number of students, combining of programs or any other factor. SacState generally has the highest pass rates amongst BSN programs in California ear after year. Furthermore if you are going to "correct" someone at least use comparable programs (BSN-BSN, 100+ students/year -100+ students/year, etc.)

I used that same site as well. I'm actually not being argumentative, you stated "highest pass rate" without any qualifiers, therefore that could easily include all programs. Your post that I just quoted here is very specific. Among the BSN programs, Sac State is extremely good, if not top in the group. Just glancing through that page, I don't think I saw a higher pass rate among BSN programs for 2012-2013 regardless of number of students taking the NCLEX the first time. When you make a blanket statement like you did, you open yourself up to being called on it.

It is clear that Sac State generally prepares it's students very well for the NCLEX. Based on track record among the CSU schools, you can't find a better program.

Hello!! Can someone explain to me the repeat policy. Is it we can repeat any course one time. Or is it one repeat per section? I have to retake a bio and chem class will that be a 5 point deduction? I would go to advising but I have class at those times.

Hi Lalagirl,

For SacState, you can repeat any prerequisite or corerequisite course 3 times. If you repeat it a 4th time, they take away 5 points from your total for the fourth and each consecutive attempt. Hope that helps. :cheeky:

Actually I believe you may only retake a pre requisite or Co req once. On the second retake they deduct 5 points. But retaking each class once will not cause a deduction, so as long as they are for different requirements then you'll be fine

That's nice of them. CSU bakersfield didn't allow for any retakes. The suspense is making this month go by SO SLOW!! Usually it zips by, but ugh it's only the 10th!

Thank You for answering my question! Also what do you mean for different requirements?

I meant that since you have to retake a bio and a Chem class, they are each fulfilling a different pre-req. But each class taken that satisfies a requirement counts as an attempt, even if they were different classes. Eg I've taken multiple Chem classes that each counted as an attempt toward the Chem requirement (although no points were deducted for using the grade from the first class taken). Hope that didn't confuse you too much hehe, just wanted to add that part in since I didn't realize it when I was first starting my application

Lalagirl,

Here is a correction for you....:bag:

"If a prerequisite or corequisite course has been taken more than once, the highest grade will be included in the Nursing GPA calculation used to rank candidates. However, if a course has been taken more than twice within a seven-year period, preceding the first day of the Supplemental Nursing Application filing period, a five-point deduction per course will be taken from the candidate's final score in the ranking for admission to the clinical nursing program. Repeats will be evaluated based on content and GE Areas; not course numbers. Exceptions may be allowed for students who completed course work as part of a previous major on a case-by-case basis. The In-Progress Policy above applies to repeated courses. If you are considering applying to other institutions, we recommend you contact each institution for advisement regarding their repeat policy."

This is from the SacState website. I apologize for my mistake earlier; I haven't been advising for awhile.:shy:
