Who's Hiring New Grads?

U.S.A. Arizona

Who's hiring new grad nurses in the phoenix area? I am a recent new grad waiting to take my boards and actively looking for employment. I graduated from a ASN program. I am willing to relocate anyone have any leads?

Unfortunately, it happens every 10 years or so. Next we'll hear in the news poor financial numbers from the hospitals. And I don't recall hearing the american hospital association lobbied washington for a part of the stimulus either.

Bad numbers have been in the news. Things cycle around. My department isn't hiring new people - slowly letting the people who are leaving - leave. So things have actually been busy. I'm getting some overtime and as much call as I want. This far no more - if this is as bad as it gets, I can deal. If it gets worse, who knows. Summertime will be the test when the snowbirds go home.

Exactly...the thing is we haven't slowed down as expected during the holidays. We were busy straight through with an increase in our census. Overtime is encouraged in our unit due to some staff leaving and we're always short staffed. However, "incidental" overtime is being severely monitored. So our reports are short and sweet and you'd better explain yourself (in writing) why you're clocking out late.

Our facility did remove our "critical need staffing" shift differential, which allowed nurses to place yourself on call with extra pay if you're called in. But so far, not too much has changed on the clinical end of things. I think that makes me worry just a little.

We're not being allowed overtime right now and being staffed tightly. Also being called off.

q for the new grads seeking work, are you applying only to hospitals? Also did you work as an LPN during your final year of school or will this be your first nursing job?

I graduated in 1999, I worked as a CNA, then LPN, and got a job right away as a RN at a hospice in Colorado based on my previous experience (and talking directly to the nurse recruiter who I asked to make available a per diem position for me, and she did..wasn't much more than part time but I enjoyed the job)

More bad news for AZ hospitals:

http://tucsoncitizen.com/daily/frontpage/111577.php

The hospital association survey found that 45 percent of hospitals in Arizona instituted a hiring freeze in the third quarter of 2008. In January, Burns said UMC had not imposed a hiring freeze, but that had changed by March.

"Our goal is to not have any layoffs at UMC," Burns said. "We will fight hard to protect our staff. However, you never know what can transpire."

Strange said TMC is under a "hiring chill."

"We do have jobs that are posted, but each one of those positions are carefully looked at," she said.
