Pathology for NAU - Is it worth it?

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

I am just finishing up pre-requisites for admission into the accelerated nursing program at U of A. I thought I would also apply to NAU's accelerated program, but they require an additional class that U of A does not - pathology. If I were to take pathology, it would only be for admission to NAU, no other school on my list requires it. I would also have to take it during summer intersession, which means I would be charged per credit hour ($944 total). After this semester I will be finished with all classes except pathology, should I go ahead and take it or just cross NAU off the list? Is pathology all that important for a pre-nursing student to have under their belt before admission, broadly speaking? Is it worth $900+?

Thank you for your help!

Don't know if it's worth it, but I applied for Pathology over the summer too through NAU. I'm actually an RN, but trying to get into the RN-BSN program through NAU, and NAU has the cheapest program in the state. I had 2 friends who went through the accelerated program through UofA but they had prior degrees already. I will tell you it's not worth taking the NAU patho because UofA incorporates Pathology in their program. This is what my friend has told me. So save your money unless you're thinking of going to NAU. NAU from what I hear has a really decent program, you may want to think about going there.

Thank you. That actually helps me with my decision a lot.

Are you talking about pathophysiology? I graduated from NAU's regular BSN program and at the time the nursing program was 6 semesters; they've now made this shorter into 5 semesters by eliminating patho AS part of the nursing program and instead as a prerequisite. If I were you, I would take patho for 2 reasons: 1) because you have a greater chance of getting into NAU's program and 2) even if you are accepted into UofA's, you now will have one less class required and will be able to spend that time studying!

Only you can decide if it's worth it but I'm currently taking the online patho at NAU and I can tell you it's a very easy class. It appears to start hard but the test questions are repeated in subsequent tests making it progressively easier. I can't say I learned much, so from that perspective it's a disappointment but it's not going to crush you either.

Kiltlifter, I am just starting the online PATHO at NAU and it appears really difficult based on the first practice quiz I just took!!! I am a straight-A student, so don't know what's going on, or whether my 201,202, and 205 classes didn't adequately prepare me or what!? But I'm freaking out. Can you please share with me any more information/details about how to best succeed in this course?

Why don't you take the course at Maricopa Community College? The comparable course is HRC 240. The cost is $290

If you are willing to pass NAU off the list because you don't want to take this class, then it probably isn't the right fit for you...go to a school you have researched and believe is the right fit for you, by questioning NAU's requirements, it sounds to me like you aren't that keen on NAU. Just an observation of course

Since it sounds like you're here in Tucson, why not also look into seeing if PCC offers it? It'd be MUCH more affordable than U of A or NAU. If you're really looking into NAU's program, it'd be worth it. If not, since someone earlier mentioned that Patho is incorporated into UA's program, it'd make it a little easier on you studying wise if you get into UA's program. (WOW...did that last sentence make ANY sense? lol)

Thanks for the suggestions. I have now taken two quizzes and gotten 100% on both of them, so I've decided to stick with the NAU course - Kiltlifter's experience was right on the money - the class seems incredibly difficult (i.e., the reading, notes, etc.) but the quizzes (and I hope the exams) are relatively easy breezy! Just the opposite - go figure! By far, one of the strangest class experiences I've had...
