Anyone else out on the Slope?

U.S.A. Alaska

I have been working In Barrow AK (furthest north point) since Dec and was wondering if there are any others out there with similar experiences. I am a permanant nurse, not a traveler, that left a large metro area in Fla for the snowy tundra. We are a small hospital in a town of about 4000. We see all kinds of cases and get a lot of medevac stabilization. My previous focus was high risk(high tech) OB and am currently working all areas. Just thought i wouldcheck to see how others are doing.

Hi there, I'm way below you in Kodiak. We had some great northern lights the past few nights.

Is Kodiak as pretty as i have heard. Barrow is not exactlyscenic but there is wildlife aplenty and all the snow you could ever want. We have a 5 year plan here but really want to visit other parts of the state,I am still in a bit of culture shock at the hospital but work with a pretty good group.

Hi there...don't currently live in Alaska, but was stationed there from 86 to 88 in Ft Greely (Delta Junction) and loved it.

hello fellow nurses, I'm a RN down here in Seward, I was a traveler and have been here four yrs now. Lets stay in touch.

Yes, Kodiak is beautiful. Lots of sunshine today. Sooner74, I've only been to Seward once - to get on the Rusty Tusty to Kodiak. It was a really neat visit, hoping to stop in again on the way out of Alaska.

wish I was there. I was going to take a travel position there but couldn't make it back to the states in time for my daughters wedding. what is life like at the upper most point of the US. maybe someday I'll get up there. I have fallen in love with alaska after a friend of mine told me about when she lived in alaska. I started doing alot of searching and the more I discovered about Alaska the more I want to work there. I hope to work there soon if the bottom doesn't drop out of travel nursing before I can get up there. So until then maybe you could share some of our life with those of us who wish we were there. :yeah::typing

Hi,

I'm in Cincinnati Ohio, nowhere near the arctic circle. I am an RN and CRT working in the ER. I've thought about visiting Barrow as a travel RN to see how I liked it. I've lived a few years at a remote interior military post but there are trees and stuff there so not the same (except for the wind and cold). Can you spare a little time to correspond with me to answer some of my questions about the place? I've got a bunch of questions: How long does it take to get a birthday card from the lower 48, is there cell phone service (I'm on AT&T), does the hospital there still provide its RN's with apartments on-site and if so, is there wi-fi or does one need a separate ISP subscription, is my cat welcome, does the hospital have a service vehicle used by staff for things like grocery runs, where does a person catch a movie (I've heard the school is used to show evening movies), do you receive mail only at a PO Box or can it be sent to the hospital quarters? Believe it or not, that's "the tip of the ice-berg as far as my questions go. I have thought of a bunch of others but those are my most pressing. I've researched various Google entries on both Barrow in general and the hospital specifically and to be honest, I'm intrigued and a little disappointed by how sporifice the info/images are. Can you help?
