Well here I go, I'm almost 47 and I start classes toward my RN tomorrow. I'M scared, nervous, I feel like crying. Why GOD did I wait so long? I just feel Too Old. I just feel like I waited too long, but I also feel like I cant give up. Why Am I soo Emotional.

Specializes in Psych, Substance Abuse.

I was 46 when I graduated, and I got a job in the specialty I really, really wanted.

There are people that pursue medicine in their 40's! In this modern world, most people are very welcoming and supportive of non-traditional students. Welcome and good luck to you! Acquiring knowledge is a life-long journey and no one should tell you otherwise! Sending much love and support your way! :)

I am 46, and I graduate this spring, but then have to go back for my BSN (sigh...) I am one of 3 in my class of 40 that are 45-46, (we all have young- preteen children at home too). One is also a grandma, and there is one gal in my class who is 54. There are also several in their 30s. As someone else said, your life experience will help you. Best of luck to you.

Whatever! You are never too old to learn and pursue your dreams. Don't be nervous or emotional, there will be plenty of time for that during school (and trust me, you will become emotional).

You will be quite surprised at how well everyone gets along from the youngest to the oldest. I am 41 and getting ready to start level 3 in another week. Our class age ranges from early 20s to mid 50s and everyone treats everyone with respect. We share information, eat, drink, and be merry together (lol), study together, etc. It will be fine, you will be fine.

Congratulations on pursuing your dreams. Enjoy!

Just think about all you have to offer with the years of life experience you have as opposed to someone who is 20. Don't concentrate on the negatives, think of the positives. I graduated last month and am turning 39 soon. The way I see it, I have the ability to talk to patients easily and make them comfortable where some of my younger peers are less socially competent. I also have years of experience working and creating an efficient workflow for myself, whereas younger people may be more scattered. There are positives and negatives to being any age. You can do this.

Specializes in geriatrics,psych.

I had an person in my LPN class who was 56/57. NEVER too late.. Why not. If this is the only life you get.. live it to the fullest!!

You can do this. I was 46 when I graduated from my ADN program. Most of my classmates range from the mid 30's, 40's, and one student was 60 years old when she started.

Who cares how old you are? Never let any opportunity pass you by in this lifetime. You never want to be on your deathbed saying : I wish.... I had done......

Life is too short and its worth making our dreams come true. Go get that degree.

Congratulations on taking this exciting new challenge. I remember feeling the same way when I started LPN classes at 46 and graduated at 47, but I should have just began my RN at that age. I went back at 51 for my RN and will graduate in May of this year, after which I will transfer to obtain my BSN. Best of Luck to you.

Great! Don't feel awkward, I've had several former classmates who were in their 50s going into nursing. It's not just for the young and it's such a broad field that one can do so many things with. As much as I complain about my current specialty, I know that there are so many other specialties I can do.

I started classes for my BSN when I was 52. Got my RN liscense when I was 55. You can do it. Good luck!

I was about two years younger than you when I entered nursing school. It can be done! Good luck and welcome to nursing.
