Whats your least favorite type of patient to take care of in the ER.....

Mine would have to be the drug over dose....had one on my last shift the treatment is pretty much the same What we normally get are the ones that havent done it right only taken enough to make them sleepy or beligerent so they dont end up intubated......Its pretty standard care....Large bore IV's monitor....foley....narcan/romazicon....charcoal...which always ends up all over the place........lol.....and sometimes NG tubes...they can be a real work out of your nursing skills....iv's, foley's, ng tubes...an of course restraints and the restraint paper work that goes with it.............Give me a lunger or MI any day.

I've seen it a few times around the DC suburbs. Not pretty.

Dust aka pcp is scary stuff. We get 'em every once in a while. 4 point leathers, 5 & 2, 1:1 until they come back to earth. Knew some guys who were into dust back in hs. Very unpredictable, very prone to violence.

My least favorite......the young, usually somewhat overweight woman who comes in with lower abdominal pain every 2-3 weeks. Lines, labs, iv fluids, a little zofran and morphine and then pelvic exam. When you go to ask about their pain, they have to put their Obama phone down and inevitably let you know their pain is still a 10. Then they send their friend, boyfriend, family member, etc. to the vending machine for chips. Because they almost always come by ambulance, they will need a medicaid cab to transport them home. Give me an ETOHer over that any day!

What region of the country are you in that you see so many PCP induced patients?

I am in the midwest, I work in a Level I trauma ER, county ran, urban core.

Our hospital see more on PCP (AKA being "wet") than we do Meth use.

We get one at least once every 2-3 days.

they have to put their Obama phone down

Yes, because Barack Obama invented and implemented welfare.

And, if you're talking about that whole false rumor about Obama subsidizing cell phones for people on welfare, you might want to do some more research.

Here in New York, there are cell phone subsidies for low income people. Many times, the people have 2 cell phones, usually their "Obama phone", as they like to call them, and a blackberry or android. I didn't come up with the name, buddy, but that is what the people who get these phones call them. It's just nauseating to me the kind of abuse of the system I see every day. We have free and low income health care clinics in my area that are open till evening hours. There is a chain of grocery stores that will give free antibiotics with a prescription. But people continue to abuse the system and feel that it is their right. I believe everyone has the right to health care and I support programs that are designed to help people down on their luck. I just have a problem with those who are in the system and then continually take advantage of everything.

What is an "Obama phone"?

This is the first I have heard of this term.....

Maybe I'm not up with the times?

i also do not like those cold/flu type patients who think i can "cure" them before their visit is over.

or those that was just seen by their primary care doc or ER doc that morning and are back to see the ER doc again that night because __________________ (my throat is still sore, i still cough, i still have the flu, etc. fill in the blank).

Those are the WORST!! ah!

Free cell phones with (as I recall) ~200 free minutes every month, provided to low-income/no-income people.

Well, I checked the link and this is not available in my area. No wonder I haven't heard of this before.

It's available in my area if you are on any of the following.....medicaid, SSI, subsidized housing (section 8), HEAP (help for heating), food stamps, public assistance and free school lunch. It's a good program for those who seriously can't afford a phone. However, I see many people who have these phones and blackberries, androids, smart phones, etc. They use up their.free minutes and then only use the other devices for internet and after their minutes are used on their other phone.

Gotta love the ones with the fancy manicures and hairstyles and "Coach" bags and designer jeans and whatever who also have the freebie cell phones....
