RNI2011 4 Posts Nov 14, 2011 Hi! I'm new here. I'm taking pre-requisites for Nursing, mainly because I want to be a Nurse Informatics. I have more than 9 years work experience as a programmer and systems analyst. This week, an adviser discouraged me to take up Nursing because she felt that it's not that type of job that I should do. I told her that I can't lift heavy weights. Do you think, she's right? Are Nurse Informatics required to lift heavy weights?Thank you. I appreciate it.
Mijourney 1,301 Posts Nov 14, 2011 RNI2011, even though this is not the correct thread for your question, have you taken a look at health information management? The graduate level programs in that discipline offer degrees in health informatics which would qualify you for a number of roles in informatics including CIO. As an RN, I personally feel that anyone who is interested in becoming a nurse ought to be willing and able to take care of patients for a period of time before they jump into administrative or managerial roles designed for experienced nurses. That means working with patients from all walks of life and of all sizes. Check out http://www.ahima.org and see what you think. A good number of the pre-regs for health information management are the same as nursing. Best wishes.
RNI2011 4 Posts Nov 15, 2011 Thanks, Mijourney for your suggestions and reply. I appreciate it. The problem here in our place is that we are far from the business district or the big city where you can find schools that offer variety of courses. Living in the country side also prompted me to go back to school since I can't look for an IT job around this area. I'm a military spouse by the way, that's why we moved to places. I'll take a look at the link that you gave and see what can I do. Thank you.Do you know what is the minimum lifting weight requirement for a nurse? Thanks.
