Young Nurses!

Nurses General Nursing

I'm 22 and I just want to see how many young nurses in their 20's are really out there! (Not to offend anyone in their 30's or older!) they say there are less young nurses emerging into the field these days I'm not sure if I believe that! Show of hands ! ?

Specializes in ICU/ER.

graduated high school at 17, bsn @ 21, now 22 and 8mos.

I'm 23, graduated with a BSN at 22! Youngest RN in my Medical/Neuro ICU. Even the new-er grads are older than me! I don't really talk about how young I am, lol, & I think most people I work with assume that I'm older :)

Specializes in Med-Surg/urology.
I just turned 24 on Sunday :) I graduated at 22 from my BSN program, straight from high school, and I've been working as a nurse since February. I'm a school nurse and I'm pretty much one of the youngest people employed by my district. When everyone found out on Monday that I turned 24 the universal reply was, "You're such a baby!" lol I didn't take offense to it at all. There was a lot of young people in my BSN class, but I think the median age was around 25/26.

The great thing about being so young and having no kids I was easily able to pick up and move 500+ miles for a nursing job. I decided to stay down here and I like it so much! I feel really blessed to be so young and already have my bachelor's degree plus a start on a really awesome career. I'm glad I found out nursing was the right path for me early on!

Happy belated birthday! I turned 24 on Wednesday. I became a CNA at 19, and I was always the youngest person at my jobs lol! Started nursing school at 21, became an LPN at 22, graduated with my BSN in June & got licensed in August. Still looking for a job but hoping that my interview next week pans out :) Oh yeah, I was the youngest in my cohort- my nickname was "The Baby of the Group" lol !

Specializes in Early Intervention, Nsg. Education.

I graduated from high school at 16 (a year early) and went right into LPN school. I was a GN at age 17 and actually had to get a work permit! :o Fortunately, I turned 18 a little over a week before boards, because I was not a legal adult and would not have been allowed to take the test. (This was in the days of having everyone drive to the testing site, get a hotel room, and make a big event out of it! Memories.....)

I applied for a 2-year RN program while I was still in LPN school, and was accepted. If you're following the math, that meant that I started RN school when I was 17, almost 18, and passed LPN boards during my first semester of RN school. My LPN program was a "hospital program," so none of my classes were transferable and I had to find a way to fit all of my gen-ed courses in around my nursing courses and clinicals. I CLEP tested as many classes as I could, and took two summer courses between my 1st and 2nd years of the program. When I graduated in May 1992, I was about 19 1/2. There were several older students in my classes, especially in LPN class, and we engaged in lots of joking and gentle ribbing (at times and in places where it was appropriate to do so.)

Of course, karma has a way of catching up, eventually...

In 2008 I went back to school for a different major, and there wasn't a single student in the room who would have been too old to be my son or daughter! :::shudder:::

I'm 26 and will finish my LPN next year. And will be an RN a year after! I'm excited.

I thought I was OLD but after seeing so many ppl starting nursing as their second career n being in their mid 30s or even 40s I don't feel that bad.

Good luck to all ;)

Anyways good luck to the old and young ;)

I'll be 21 when I graduate from BSN, currently I'm 20.

I just want to say congrats to all of you! You should all be so proud of yourselves. I wasn't in the right frame of mind for nursing when I was 20. I hate that I will be in my 30s when I graduate!

Specializes in burn ICU, SICU, ER, Trauma Rapid Response.

A couple years ago I was night shift preceptor in the SICU to an 18 year old RN. We regularly get new grads who are 19.

PS That 18 year old RN a few years ago will be graduating CRNA school in 2014 at the age of 24.....

It sucks being a young new nurse too. I started a new job, about three weeks ago. And I'm frustrated because in two days of training they threw me into this huge role of being the full time nurse for all prescriptions. We barely touched RXs in school and so it's a psych clinic job and I like it but the problem was I refill all the RXs and our doctors don't keep the med lists current. For instance, there are two places in the chart for current meds. And I was going by the first list and our doctors don't update the charts as they should. I have learned to always check Both lists now but i am very very upset knowing I was referring off a current list that wasn't current. I am doing much better now but the first week I was so overwhelmed with having to do all the call backs for the clinic, all the RXs, uas, etc. and two days of training on this job wasnt anything.

Specializes in ICU.

I'm 25 with almost a year. A lot of people are surprised to find out nursing was a second degree for me. I look young too and occasionally I'll get a patient or family member who comments.
