32 years old and ready to switch my career to become a nurse! Am I too old?

Published

I've thought and thought and thought again about switching my career. I've chosen to pursue a career in nursing. I am 32 years old, is this too old to switch???? Please comment.

Im 31 and I just started my first pre-req class this fall semester. Don't worry about your age. Just go for it....

I sure hope not - I'm 45, and just signed up to RE-TAKE some of the pre-requisites since I took them SO LONG ago! (I graduated from college in 1993 with a degree in Economics, and just enrolled to get my RN.) Good luck!!

Specializes in Emergency Room, CEN, TCRN.

I'm turning 33 half way through my first quarter of the BSN program I'm attending.

Specializes in Colorectal and Gastroenterology.

I don't know what it is, but these age life expectations need to be removed from our thinking. That's been the biggest barrier for me and working towards my nursing career. I'm 35 and I have finally gotten over the age thing. I used to tell myself I'm too old. I should've done it sooner beat myself up then give up. Over and over again. I think I have gotten over that, my faith has helped a lot. I have at least 30 more years to work so why should I stay where I am not happy when I could pursue my dream?

Im 35 and I'm going for nursing, my life experience has helped me for my career, sometimes life experience trumps youth. You are not too old I tell you! You are right on time!

This was a change in career for me as well, and I didn't get my degree and my first (and so far only) nursing job until I was 42. You can totally do this! :)

This is so encouraging. I'm 31 and had my doubts but still decided that it would be now or never. You guys are amazing and have encouraged me. Original poster, o guess we still have time left to make our dreams come true! Let's go í ¾í´—

I say go for it! I made the decision to become a nurse when I was 31, it took me two years to complete all of my pre-reqs, and I'm now 33 and I'll be starting my real nursing courses next week. There are so many students in my class that are my age and older. I believe you are never too old to follow your heart. My fiance went back to school to get his GED a few years ago, and there was man in his class that was receiving his also and he was 82!! I remember asking myself that same question "Am I too old to become a Nurse?" then I thought of the man finally receiving his GED at the age of 82, and I said to myself, No! I'm not too old, I can do this! And you can too!! I think If I would've went to Nursing School in my twenties, I don't think I would have taken it seriously and probably would've quit. Do what you feel is right for you, age is just a number:)

I'm 34 with 3 kids, English as a second language and going to Nursing school. It is so worth it if you like to do it.
