Yearly Bonus Ripped Off?

So at my local hospital, nurses are getting a yearly bonus. But, I guess the IRS taxes the hell out of them. Up to 40 percent of their bonus is gone! Do you think this is crazy? A bonus is payment that a nurse earns, and it should not be tampered with! Maybe someone with more experience with taxes can explain why this happens.

We do have the possibility of a yearly bonus. It is based on state survey results. Perfect survey=bigger bonus, up to I think three or four non major sites is a smaller bonus and anything over a certain number of sites or any major site = no bonus. It is not equal bonuses for all staff, management gets a much higher dollar amount, with the highest going to the administrator and the dollar amount diminishing with each tier of management.

That being said, we haven't seen that in a couple of years. Though I gotta admit with the bigger bonuses going to management they do try their darndest to fight every site!
